Franklin could only hold Kori Hamm back so long.
Hamm, the reigning Daily Star Player of the Year, scored with 2 minutes, 53 seconds remaining as visiting Edmeston tied Franklin, 1-1, in a Tri-Valley League girls soccer game Tuesday afternoon.
Taylor Ross played a ball through to Hamm in the middle. Hamm beat a defender and shot from about 20 yards to the lower left corner for the tying goal.
"Probably for the last 15 minutes (the ball) barely got out of our end," Franklin coach J.J. Laing said. "They were coming with everything. The proverbial kitchen sink was being thrown at us."
Laing pointed out the play freshman goalie Haley Downin, who finished with 10 saves for the Purple Devils (5-6-1, 3-5-1).
"She was huge tonight," Laing said. "She had at least two or three shots that Kori Hamm hit that would have been under the crossbar, but (Downin) tipped them over the top. She did an outstanding job. A couple of their corner kicks she went was up in the air and caught them before they had a chance."
Franklin took the lead with about eight minutes remaining in the opening half.
Lily Stalter had the ball on the right side and sent it to the right to Jordan Beers, who ran in, took one touch and shot before a defender could close in. Beers' shot from about 20 yards to the lower-left corner.
"We played real well," Laing said. "We bent a little bit and didn't break much. It was a spirited match. There's going to be a lot of people limping around tomorrow."
Susanna Johnson finished with three saves for Edmeston, which shared the Section Four Class D championship with Davenport last season before the Panthers advanced on penalty kicks. Edmeston earned co-state champion honors when it tied S.S. Seward in the final.
Edmeston outshot Franklin, 20-6.
"This is definitely our biggest game this year," Laing said. "What it comes down to is we went out and showed to which level we can play. Granted, I wish we had more shots. But it comes down to duplicating the level of performance over the next few games. If we can do that, hopefully we can get into sectionals and see what we can do from there."
The Purple Devils visit Morris at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Mallory Garretson snapped a scoreless tie with 7:33 remaining as host Cherry Valley-Springfield won its 10th straight game with a Tri-Valley League victory.
Lauren Loucks sent a pass backward in the box to Garretson, who was just inside the 18. Garretson shot from the left into the near corner from about 15 yards.
"It surprised me," said CV-S coach Amy Garretson, Mallory's mother. "She passes and assists, but she usually doesn't take shots. It was a very nice surprise."
The Patriots (11-1, 7-1) had a 15-3 advantage in shots. Tiffany Thompson made one save for the shutout. Mariah Coville had six saves for Milford.
"It was a good game, a hard-fought game," Garretson said. "That's a good win for us to go into Friday."
The Patriots trail T-V East-leading Schenevus by a game. The teams meet at 4:30 p.m. at CV-S.

Ryanmiller took the ball on a breakaway down the left side and as Sherburne-Earlville goalie Caitlynn Adams came out of the goal, Eyanmiller hit a hard shot to the opposite side about midway up the goal.
"It was a great game," Cooperstown coach Jennifer Pindar said. "We played very well. It was a back-and-forth game. This is a great win for us."
Eryn Bass scored twice for the Redskins (8-3, 4-2), who host undefeated Sauquoit Valley on Thursday.
