Schenevus shuts out Laurens in Stamford Mayor's Cup

Schenevus' boys and second-year soccer coach Jim Huntington might be a factor in the Tri-Valley League this season.

Tyler Morris and Dave Vosatka scored two goals apiece Tuesday in leading the Dragons to a 4-0 victory over perennial power Laurens in the first-round of the Stamford Mayor's Cup Tournament. The game also counted in the Tri-Valley League standings.

It marked the season-opener for both teams.

"I think it is," Huntington said when asked if Tuesday's game was a big victory. "We're kind of, I don't want to say building, but we're improving all the time. We have a great bunch of kids and this was a good result."

Huntington guided Edmeston's boys soccer program to a Class D state title in 2003 and a Section Four Class D championship in 2005. He was fired by Edmeston's school board following the 2005 season for undisclosed reasons and didn't coach again at the varsity level until last season, when he steered Schenevus to a 6-8-3 record.

"We lost some key players from last season, but for some reason we've been to plug in the holes," Huntington said. "Some guys have never played before and they're contributing. Things are looking positive."

Vosatka opened the scoring 14 minutes in on a breakaway. Morris made it 2-0 on a penalty kick with four minutes left in the first half after a Laurens player was called for a handball in the box.

Schenevus will play Jefferson or South Kortright at 4 p.m. Saturday in a second-round game of the Stamford Mayor's Cup.
