OHS athletes honored by conferences

Seven Oneonta High baseball players received honors from the Southern Tier Athletic Conference, which released its 2010 All-Stars on Friday.

Senior first baseman Nate Eastman joined senior outfielders James Carson and Brenden Wolfanger on the Central-East All-Conference team, along with junior designated hitter Dan Hodne.

Three Yellowjackets also earned All-Central Division accolades in sophomore second baseman Conor Youngs, senior outfielder Dan Broe and sophomore pitcher Mike Calkins.

In boys lacrosse, Oneonta senior Alex Meschutt received Section Four Division II Second Team honors as a midfielder.

CWPA realigns for 2011 season

The Collegiate Water Polo Association will realign for the 2011 season and go from three divisions (North, South, West) to two (West, South) for its Division I-II varsity women's teams. As a result, all 12 teams will advance to the CWPA Eastern Championship at Indiana University next spring.

This is a one-year solution that will be re-examined when Notre Dame College (Ohio) joins the CWPA as a full-time member for the 2011-12 academic year.

The division alignment is as follows: West _ Bucknell, Gannon, Hartwick, Indiana, Mercyhurst and Michigan. South _ Brown, George Washington, Harvard, Princeton, Salem International and Maryland.

Local men complete marathon

Davenport resident Gary Gundlach had the fastest local finish at the Lake Placid Marathon on June 13.

Gundlach, 56, placed 109th overall in a net time of 3 hours, 56 minutes, 27 seconds. He also finished fourth out of 23 in the 50-59 age-group.

Oneonta resident Chad Stewart, 27, completed the event in 4:06:46 to place 146th overall and 37th out of 58 in the 20-29 age-group.

Canadian Sebastien Roulier crossed in 2:39:48 to win the marathon, which attracted 376 participants.

Sidney girl wins Pitch, Hit & Run

Sidney resident Olivia Katherine DeMott won her age-group during a Pitch, Hit and Run sectional competition May 29 in East Greenbush.

A first-grader at Sidney Elementary, 7-year-old Olivia won the girls 7-8 title with 479 points to beat the runner-up by 93. Olivia won a local competition at Sidney to advance to the sectional, which featured six girls in the 7-8 group.

Participants tried to hit a strike zone as many times as possible in six pitches; hit a baseball off of a tee the farthest and the straightest; and run the fastest from shallow right field around second and third bases to home.

Scores of the eight sectional winners across the state were to be compared earlier this month, with the top three qualifying for the state competition. Those who advanced to the next round were to be notified by June 10.

Golf event raises more than $40,000

The local team of Tom Thetford, Alex Gracias, Tom Fox and Joe Gould earned the "Doc" Lusins Trophy as the overall winners of the 11th annual A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Golf Classic, which ran June 7 at the Oneonta Country Club.

The foursome finished with a winning score of 50.8 at the event, which raised more than $40,000 for projects at Fox and attracted 198 golfers and 100 donors.

Morning winners were as follows: Flight A, John Brooks, Dwight McKown, Rich Myers and Gary Lewis; Flight B, Todd Cata, Tim Jowell, Carl Lusins and Matt Lusins; and Flight C, Dominic Parlato, Todd Parlato, Craig Gelbsman and Howie Gelbsman.

Afternoon winners were: Flight A, Scott Barrett, Gerry Groff, Jeff Woeppel and Bill Stamp; Flight B, James Rice, James Rice, Jr., Sandy Rice and Erika Thetford; Flight C, Tom Thetford, Alex Gracias, Tom Fox and Joe Gould; Flight D, Mike Stein, Frank Panzarella, Nick Nicoletta and Josh Truman; Flight E, Dave Bird, Matt Dobler, Eileen Bird and Julie Bird.

Teen with local ties leads county

Tim Lesuer, the son of 1969 Oneonta High graduate John Lesuer, had the highest batting average in Ventura County, Calif., this past high school baseball season.

Tim Lesuer, 17, batted .543 and earned Frontier League MVP honors for Nordoff High. He will play this summer for the Milwaukee Brewers' scout team, which accepts high school and college athletes.

Also a 1973 Oneonta State graduate, John Lesuer played baseball for the Yellowjackets and the Red Dragons. The Lesuers live in Ojai, Calif.

Golf event Saturday at Colonial Ridge

Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens will host the Morris Booster Club captain-and-crew tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday. Cost is $25 per person and includes prize money, skins, pins and donation.

The course also will host the Morris Alumni Association captain-and-crew, which is open to the public and has an 8 a.m. shotgun start on June 26.

Cost is $25 per person and includes net and gross prize money, closest to pins, skins and donation. All proceeds will benefit the Morris Alumni Association. A reunion will follow at 8 p.m.

Hall to start Authors' Series on Saturday

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown announced Friday the following schedule for its Summer Authors' Series, which starts Saturday and runs through August.

All programs are free with Museum admission.

Hall to host Classic events this weekend

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown announced its weekend schedule for the second annual Hall of Fame Classic, which will be played Sunday at Doubleday Field.

Museum members may reserve tickets for the following events Saturday by calling 607-547-0397:

Family Catch: Noon-2 p.m. at Doubleday Field. A limited number of participants can play catch in 20-minute intervals during this free event.

Legends for Youth Skills Clinic: 3 p.m. at Doubleday Field. Former major leaguers will help youths ages 5-12 enhance their baseball skills. This free program is exclusively for museum members.

Voices of the Game: 7 p.m. at Cooperstown Central's Sterling Auditorium. Hall of Famers Gary Carter, Bob Feller, Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage, Harmon Killebrew, Phil Niekro and Ozzie Smith will participate in this special Father's Day edition. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for youths ages 12-and-younger.

Tickets for Sunday's Classic are still available and can be reserved online at baseballhall.org or by calling 1-866-849-7770. Tickets cost $12.50 for first- and third-base seats and $11 for outfield seats. A handling charge per ticket applies.

The Classic will follow the Cooperstown Game Day Parade, which begins at noon on Main Street, and the Legends Hitting Contest, which starts at 1 p.m. at Doubleday Field.

Susquehanna Bass to start Sunday

The Susquehanna Bass Association will start its 23rd season on Sunday during the opening weekend of bass season.

The House of Paws Kennels, which runs from 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday on Canadarago Lake, begins a 12-tournament schedule that concludes with the Art-Nate VanSteenburg Memorial Classic during the last weekend of October.

At the end of the season, the SBA will name its anglers of the year based the total weight of fish caught per team during the season. Jim Dillenbeck and Vic VanSteenburg won the award last year.

The Peggy Parker Real Estate Open runs from 6 a.m.-2 p.m. June 27 on Cross Lake (near Baldwinsville).

Father's Day Ox Roast is Sunday

The Gilbertsville Rod and Gun Club will host its annual Ox Roast from noon-4 p.m. Sunday.

The band Wild Ones will perform at the event, which features a 3D Bow Shoot and will take place rain or shine as tables will be set up under tents.

Cost is $15 per person. Registration runs from 7-11 a.m. Breakfast will be served from 7-10 a.m. and refreshments will be available all day.

The event features 40 targets and seven classes. Trophies will be awarded for juniors and cubs.

Tsuga Links to host shootout

The Tsuga Links golf course in New Berlin will feature the Theodore Fox $1,000,000 Shoot-Out this summer.

Golfers will earn one point each time they play at the course. Three points earn one qualifying shot at a 135-yard target in a fairway. The top three who are closest to the pin will advance to a final shootout Sept. 4 and receive one shot apiece to sink a hole-in-one for the million-dollar prize.

Should someone make a hole-in-one, $250,000 of the million will be donated to Catskill Area Hospice. Professionals are not allowed to participate.

Tsuga Links also will host the following events this summer.

Adult soccer season starts Monday

The Latte Lounge Oneonta Adult Summer Soccer League begins play Monday at the Swart Wilcox Fields behind Riverside Elementary.

Ten men's teams will compete at 5:45 and 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Five women's teams will play at the same times Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Lacrosse league to hold sign-ups

Lacrosse Oneonta will hold sign-ups for its adult summer league from 6-8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at the 6th Ward Booster Club Park on Scramling Road.

The league runs from Monday through Aug. 11. Tentative times for the games are 5:30 p.m. for the instructional league and 6:30-8:30 p.m. for the adult competitive league.

During sign-ups, participants are encouraged to bring their children for a beginning clinic from 6-7 p.m. each night.

A mandatory fee of $25-$50 for US Lacrosse membership is required, along with an additional $40 for Lacrosse Oneonta, which includes a jersey.

SUNY Delhi to host track meet

SUNY Delhi will host the ninth annual Bronco Track Club Track & Field Meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

A donation of $2 is the recommended entry fee, although there is no charge for club alumni.

All athletes must sign waivers. Parents or guardians must sign for athletes younger than 18.

The meet will feature competition in the shot put, long jump, mile, 100 meters, 200, 400, 800, 3,000 and 1,600 relay.

Relay teams may be formed at the meet, which is in need of assistants to time events and rake the long jump pit.

Registration forms for the Oneonta Youth Soccer Association's fall recreation program have been distributed through Oneonta elementary schools and also are available at Sport Tech.

Softball school starts June 28

The 6th Ward Athletic Club's All County Softball School is set for June 28-July 1 at Field 4 in Neahwa Park.

Sessions will run from 9 a.m.-noon each day. The camp, which will stress fundamentals, is open to players ages 9-17.

Track meets to start June 28

The first of a summer series of track meets on the new track in Gilbertsville will be held June 28.

Entry is free and prizes will be awarded. Events include a 9-and-under 55-meter dash as well as competition in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500 and 3,000.

Field events will be contested based on attendance and interest.

Sports camp to start June 28

Deer Haven Campground in Oneonta will host the VIP Sports Camp from 9 a.m.-noon June 28-July 1.

This camp, which is for youths ages 5-11, focuses on sportsmanship and character development.

Children will participate in soccer, softball, volleyball, flag football, lacrosse, swimming, golf, hiking, frisbee, kickball and badminton.

Youth soccer camps begins soon

The 2010 Headwaters Soccer Club will host seven camps for youths ages 7-17 beginning in June.

Cost to attend one camp is $60 per player. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a water bottle.

Camps, which are also open to teams, run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays. The HSC will offer the following camps:

Sport Tech to offer bicycle seminars

Sport Tech in Oneonta will continue to host its free, monthly bicycle seminars at 5:30 p.m. July 1 and Aug. 5. Each seminar will focus on simple service and maintenance techniques intended to keep bicycles riding smoothly. New skills and techniques will be taught each month.

Basketball league begins July 5

The Oneonta Boys and Girls Club's Summer Basketball League will run the week of July 5 through the week of July 26 this year.

Varsity boys will play Mondays, followed by junior varsity boys on Tuesdays, varsity girls on Wednesdays and JV girls on Thursdays. Game times are set at 5:30, 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. each day. Each team will play two games per night.

Cost is $250 per boys team and $150 per girls team. Each team must furnish its own basketballs, jerseys, medical equipment and scorekeeper or timer.

Delaware County golf tourney set

The 45th annual Delaware County Men's Amateur Golf Tournament is scheduled for July 9-11 at the par-72 Delhi College Golf Course.

The tournament will feature a championship division and five handicap flights. Entry costs $100 per player and is open to members of Delaware County golf courses or residents of Delaware County.

Elks golf tournament July 10

The Oneonta Elks Club 1312 will host its annual Gallagher Golf Tournament at 1 p.m. July 10 at the Oneonta Country Club.

The captain-and-crew event, which is open to the public, features four-person teams and has a shotgun start. Cost is $50 per person and includes greens fees, cart, a post-tournament chicken barbecue dinner and complimentary draft beer at the Elks Club. All proceeds will benefit the Elks National Foundation Scholarship Program.

O-State to host basketball camps

The Oneonta State men's and women's basketball teams will host youth camps in July.

Oneonta men's coach Vince Medici will run a boys camp from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 12-16. Cost is $140 per camper and includes a T-shirt and a string bag. For more information, call Medici at 607-436-3280 or e-mail medicivj@oneonta.edu.

Red Dragons women's coach Daphne Thompson will run a developmental overnight/commuter camp for girls ages 10-18 from July 18-22. Cost is $375 for overnight guests and $300 for commuters.

Groups of five or more from the same school who register at the same time will receive a $10 discount from the total price. A $10 discount also is available for those who register and submit full payments by June 21.

Hall of Famer to headline golf event

Baseball Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers will be the featured guest at The Business Council of New York State's third annual Business Council Member Golf Classic, which is set for July 20 at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown.

The event begins with an 11:30 a.m. buffet lunch and will be followed with a scramble golf tournament at the par-72 Leatherstocking Golf Course. The Otesaga will then host a reception and an awards dinner. The Baseball Hall will host a private dessert reception with Fingers to close the day.

Davenport Fire 5K set for July 31

The eighth annual Davenport Fire Department 5K will start at 10 a.m. July 31.

The event will start and finish at Charlotte Valley Central in Davenport, where raceday registration will be accepted from 8:30-9:45 a.m.

Cost is $15 for those who register by July 24 and $20 thereafter. Students can register for $10.

O-State men to host soccer camps Aug. 2-6

Oneonta State men's soccer coach Iain Byrne, his staff and players will host a summer soccer camp from Aug. 2-6 at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta.

The Dragon Camp runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily and is for youths ages 6-14. The Elite Camp runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily and is for high school players.

The Gilbert Lake Open Water Swim will start at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 7 at Gilbert Lake State Park in Laurens.

The Headwaters Soccer Club will host the second annual Ouleout Creek Charity Golf Tournament at 8 a.m. Aug. 14 to benefit its soccer camp program.

The second annual Owen Banks Memorial Flag Football Tournament will run Aug. 14-15 at Austin Lincoln Fields in Walton.

Also known as the Bubba Bowl, the charity event will benefit HALos, a not-for-profit bereavement counseling agency. The tournament is open to players ages 18 and older and will feature a division for co-ed "fun teams" this year.

    HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL ... ONEONTA _ Kelsey Baker hears voices in her head, but only when she's at the foul line. "I hear everyone in the background and stuff," Oneonta High junior forward Baker said Monday night, "but mainly, it's just me, the ball and the basket. You've just got to make them."   • O-State coach, Unatego AD takes job in Fla.

    The recent departure of Bill May left vacancies at Oneonta State and the Unatego School District. May, 47, was announced as Southeastern University's women's tennis coach Friday. He'll also be the school's men's tennis coach the following season when that program begins its first season. May spent seven seasons as the men's and women's tennis coach at Oneonta State. He served as athletic director at Unatego the last two seasons.
