Bernstein, Timmons win ECAC track titles

Junior sprinter Sean Bernstein and senior thrower Sarah Timmons earned titles for Oneonta State in the ECAC Championships for track and field held Friday and Saturday at Rennselaer.

Bernstein won his first ECAC outdoor title, completing the 200 meters in 21.36 seconds. Bernstein was named the NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Male Track Athlete of the Year.

Timmons won the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 11 inches.

Sean Wren, Chris Harvey, Danielle Kennedy and the O-State men's 3,200 relay team earned all-ECAC honors by finishing in the top eight.

Wren finished third in the 400 hurdles in 53.23. Harvey broke his school record in placing fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase, crossing in 9:08.33 _ 18 seconds better than his previous mark.

Kennedy became the first O-State woman to break 18 minutes in the 5,000. She finished sixth in 17:42.66 _ 24 seconds ahead of the school record by Kaitlin O'Sullivan in 2006. Teammate Brianna McLoughlin placed 15th in 18:03.04.

The relay team of Dan Bruton, Nate Weber, David Bohunicky and Kyle Howerton placed second in a school-record 7:46.24. That team set the previous record of 8:02 earlier this spring.

O-State will await invitations for the NCAA Division III Championships next weekend at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. It appears as if Bernstein, Timmons, Wren and the men's 3,200 relay team will compete at nationals.
