Round 3 for Unatego, Sidney boys

Here we go again.

Opening-round victories in the Section Four Class C Tournament by Unatego and Sidney on Tuesday means the two Midstate Athletic Conference boys basketball teams will meet for the third time during the 2011-12 season.

Dan Shelton scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the opening quarter of second-seeded Unatego's 75-63 triumph over MAC rival Greene, who visited the Spartans as the 15th seed.

Mike Ward finished with 13 points to lead seventh-seeded Sidney to a 46-37 victory over No. 10 Oxford, which also plays in the MAC.

The Spartans and the Warriors will play for the second time in less than a week when they meet for a sectional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Friday at Unatego.

Unatego is 2-0 against Sidney this season, following a 55-43 regular-season victory in January with a 43-39 win Saturday in the MAC championship game at Oneonta State.

Austin Bauerle fell a rebound shy of a double-double and Brooks Harmon scored a team-best 20 points, but Bainbridge-Guilford's season ended in the opening round of the Section Four Class C Tournament.

Bauerle had 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Bobcats, who fell into a 32-23 hole at halftime.

"They were pretty good inside," B-G coach Greg Warren said. "We were having a problem shutting them down in the interior."

Eighth-seeded B-G (11-8) also had problems stopping McKenzie Brady, a 6-foot-4 guard who scored a game-high 23 points for ninth-seeded Union Springs (10-8).

"He's a good shooter and has good size," said Warren, whose team also gave up 18 points to Mitch Hares.

Harmon hit four three-pointers and had five steals for the Bobcats, who played the first half without team scoring leader Ryan Porter. Warren said the move was a coach's decision.

"He didn't do something stupid or anything like that," Warren said of Porter, who entered the game averaging 17.4 points but finished with a season-low six points.

Porter, who scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter, also grabbed seven rebounds.
