Locals fare well at PH&R sectional

Five local boys earned top-three finishes in their respective age-groups during the MLB Pitch, Hit & Run sectional competition last Sunday at Damaschke Field in Oneonta.

Walton's Shane Merwin and Evan Staroba of Jefferson had second-place finishes. Shane amassed 744 points in the 9-10 boys age-group, 55 behind winner Donovan Pacatte of Cobleskill. Seth Wade of Jefferson placed third in the same age-group, at 705 points.

Evan finished with 417 points in the 7-8 boys age-group, which was won by Liam McGreevey of Ithaca (484). Alex Haight of Oneonta earned the bronze in the same age-group, at 409 points.

Austin Bedient of Delhi rounded out the locals in the top three. He had 994 points in the 13-14 boys age-group, following Ryan Tillotson of Marathon (1,031) and Nicholas Bird of Summit (1,029).

First-place finishers in each age-group may qualify for a Team Championship competition next month. The scores of winners from the Oneonta sectional will be compared to winning scores from other sectional competitions to determine the top three overall. Those three will be eligible to advance to a Team Championship at a New York Yankees or New York Mets game.

Locals ace No. 13 at Colonial Ridge

Don Wood of Schenevus and Mike Waffle of Morris aced the 13th hole at Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens five days apart earlier this month.

Waffle used a pitching wedge on the 120-yard, par-3 hole May 6 for his first hole-in-one. Bob and Kathy Slocum witnessed his shot.

On May 11, Wood used a 7-iron to sink his tee shot on the same hole. Dave Wood, Rob Morris and Eric Lauvas witnessed his shot.

Local man competes in powerlifting

Oneonta resident Dillion Maier, 76, competed at the 30th USAPL Masters National Powerlift Championships on April 28 in Augusta, Ga.

Maier entered the 132-pound class in the 75-79 age-group and was the only lifter in his class who weighed 130 pounds.

His overall total of 625 pounds included a 250-pound squat, a 125-pound bench press and a 250-pound deadlift.

Colonial Ridge to host tournament

The Morris Rotary Club will hold a captain-and-crew golf tournament at Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens on Saturday.

The event, which is for four-person teams, begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Entry fee is $25 per person and includes net and gross prize money, skins and pinshots. Greens fees and cart fees are extra.

3D Bow Shoot set for Sunday

The Gilbertsville Rod & Gun Club will host its first 3D Bow Shoot of the season this Sunday.

Registration runs from 7-11 a.m. Breakfast will be served from 7-10 a.m. Refreshments will be available all day.

The club is located at 158 Gun Club Road in Gilbertsville.

Trapper training course Sunday

The Davenport Center VFW will host a New York state trapper training course from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Hartwick offering swim lessons

Hartwick College's swimming and diving teams will hold their final swimming lesson from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Moyer Pool.

Cost is $15 for a 30-minute lesson, which features one-on-one instruction from a Hartwick team member. Proceeds will benefit Hartwick's program and its annual winter training trip.

Oneonta CC to host senior league

The Oneonta Country Club will begin hosting a Wednesday morning public golf league for seniors this Wednesday.

This nine-hole league with handicaps is for individuals and will begin at 8:30 a.m. Weekly cost is $10 for greens fees and $8 for carts. A one-time entry fee of $25 is required.

GOTR 5K set for June 5

Girls on the Run of Central New York will hold its ninth annual 5K Run and Walk at 2 p.m. June 5 at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown.

This non-competitive, non-timed event is designed for GOTR participants and their families.

In 2001, GOTRCNY started with 21 girls. This year, more than 700 girls from Otsego, Chenango, Delaware, Montgomery, Herkimer and Schoharie counties will participate.

OHS awards ceremony June 8

Oneonta High will host the 65th annual Varsity "O" Athletic Awards Evening at 7 p.m. June 8 in the school cafeteria.

All varsity teams will be recognized. All athletes and their families are invited to attend.

A dessert buffet will follow in the cafeteria.

Headwaters to host golf tournaments

The Headwaters Soccer Club will hold scramble golf tournaments in June and August to benefit its soccer camp program.

The 18th annual Hank Hotaling Charity Golf Tournament will begin at 2 p.m. June 11 at the Stamford Golf Club. The club also will host the third annual Ouleout Creek Charity Golf Tournament, which starts at 8 a.m. Aug. 15.

Players may register individually or as teams. Entry fee is $50 per tournament and includes greens fees, cart, golf towel and buffet. First-, second- and third-place teams will receive awards.

Lacrosse league starts June 20

Lacrosse Oneonta's summer league will run Monday and Wednesday nights from June 20-Aug. 10 at 6th Ward Booster Club Park in Oneonta.

Tentative game times are 5:30 p.m. for the Instructional League and from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for the Adult Competitive League.

Sign-ups will run from 10 a.m.-noon June 12 and from 6-8 p.m. June 13. Proof of USLacrosse Membership is required.

USLacrosse Memberships cost $25-$50. To apply for a membership or to renew one, visit the website www.uslacrosse.org.

Players also must pay a $40 fee to Lacrosse Oneonta. The fee includes a reversible jersey.

Players will need their own sticks, helments, shoulder pads, arm guards, gloves and mouthpieces. The league will furnish goals, balls and the playing field.

Softball school runs June 27-30

The 6th Ward All County Softball School will run from 9 a.m.-noon June 27-30 at Field 4 in Neahwa Park. The school, which focuses on fundamentals, is designed for players ages 9-17.

Girls basketball camp July 17-20

The Oneonta State women's basketball team will host a girls overnight/commuter camp July 17-20.

The camp, which is for girls ages 10-18, is designed to develop fundamentals. Camp counselors will include O-State players.

Cost is $295 per resident camper and $255 per commuter camper. A $35 non-refundable deposit is required with each application.

Registration, health and emergency contact information forms are required to attend camp, along with payment. Full payment is required at registration for those who submit forms after July 6.

Lacrosse camp set for July 27-30

SUNY Delhi will host the High Octane Lacrosse Camp from July 27-30.

Cost is $375 per person for this overnight camp, which is for players ages 8-18.

Hall of Famers to appear May 28

National Baseball Hall of Famers Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson, Joe Morgan and Cal Ripken will participate in the May 28 opening of a permanent exhibit at the Cooperstown museum.

One for the Books: Baseball Records and the Stories Behind Them is an interactive exhibit that will open in the Hank Aaron Gallery. It will feature more than 200 artifacts that help explore the stories behind records such as Cy Young's 511 victories, Ripken's 2,632 consecutive games played and Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak.

Special museum programming will be held throughout the day as well, including a Voices of the Game installment featuring Carew, Jackson, Morgan and Ripken. Tickets are required for the Voices event and will be first available to museum members May 2 at $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and younger).

Other special programs May 28 will be included with regular Hall admission.

Baseball Hall sets Authors' Series

The National Baseball Hall of Fame will begin its annual Authors' Series on May 28.

The program, which will take place in the Hall's Bullpen Theater, runs through Aug. 23. Each installment is included with regular museum admission.

Bassett golf event May 31

The 14th annual Bassett Medical Center Invitational is set for May 31 at the par-72 Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown.

The invitational, which features a field of 144 golfers, raises money to support the Friends of Bassett Healthcare Network Annual Fund.

Players will receive gift bags and lunch. They also are invited to attend a post-event cocktail reception and awards ceremony, which is open to guests and non-golfers and begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Otesaga Hotel. Tickets are limited and cost $50.

Sport Tech to host cycling events

Sport Tech in Oneonta will continue its free monthly bicycle-repair seminars at 5:30 p.m. June 2.

Ed Lorenz will serve as instructor for the workshops, which also will run at 5:30 p.m. July 7 and Aug. 4 in Sport Tech's bicycle shop.

Delhi Covered Bridge Run is back

The Delhi Covered Bridge Run is set for June 4.

The charity event, which took a break last year, features a 5-kilometer health walk, a 5K run and a 10K run.

Entry forms are available online at the Cardio Club website, www.thecardioclub.com. Long sleeve T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 200 participants.

Proceeds will be contributed toward college scholarships for two Delaware County graduating seniors and Camp Forget-Me-Not.

Softball tourney June 4 in Delhi

The inaugural Delaware County Corrections Local 3952 Softball Tournament Plus will begin at 8 a.m. June 4 at the American Legion Field in Delhi.

Cost is $150 per team for the single-elimination tournament, which will be one of many activities. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be available. The event also will feature crafts, vendors, children's games, a bake sale, a silent auction, 50-50 raffles and music.

Proceeds will help the Delhi Pool Fund, among others.

Registration open for triathlon

Registration is open for the inaugural Cannonsville Adventure Triathlon, which is slated for June 5.

The race at the Cannonsville Reservoir in the towns of Deposit, Tompkins and Hancock will feature a 6.2-mile run, a 3.9-mile paddle and a 12-mile bike ride.

A pre-race meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 5 in Deposit. Participants will be shuttled to the starting line, which is just east of the Roods Creek launch site. The race will start with the run at 10 a.m.

Participants must be at least age 18 by the day of the race. Registration costs $70 for an individual and $150 for a team. Registration will be online only at the IMAthlete website, www.imathlete.com.

OFO River Ride set for June 5

The Opportunities for Otsego River Ride, a cycling event that begins and ends at Neahwa Park in Oneonta, is set for June 5.

Riders may choose to follow one of five routes along the Susquehanna River Valley. The routes range from 11 to 46 miles.

Entry fee is $35. Sign-ins will run from 7:45-8:45 a.m. at the skate house.

Golf tourney June 5 at Ouleout

Ouleout Creek Golf Course in Franklin will host the Family Service Association's fourth annual Golf Tournament at 8:30 a.m. June 5.

Entry fee is $240 per four-player team and includes lunch, snacks, beverages, greens fees and a golf cart.

Individuals may enter for $60 per person and will be placed on a team.

The tournament features cash prizes, door prizes, a hole-in-one prize and contests in putting, longest drives and closest to the pins.

Fox Golf Classic set for June 6

The 12th annual A.O. Fox Hospital Golf Classic is set for June 6 at the Oneonta Country Club.

The captain-and-crew fundraiser has raised more than $350,000, which has been used to purchase a variety of medical equipment, over the last 11 years and draws between 180 and 200 participants each year.

Winners will receive a trophy and have their names engraved on the Dr. Lusins trophy, which is on display at the FoxCare Center.

Golfers will compete in the morning or the afternoon. Spots are still available for the morning round. A late-afternoon buffet dinner follows at the Foothills Performing Arts Center, with prizes awarded for both flights.

The event will feature awards for longest drives, straightest drives and closest-to-the-pin on par-3s, as well as a hole-in-one contest for a new car.

Sponsorships are still available as well. Raffle and silent auction donations will be accepted.

The Oneonta Football Booster Club will hold its seventh annual golf tournament at 1 p.m. June 11 at the Oneonta Country Club.

Women's handgun training June 11

The Oneonta Sportsmen's Club will sponsor Women on Target from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. June 11 at its facility at 251 Rod and Gun Club Road in Oneonta.

Cost is $35 for this event, which is an introduction to handgun shooting with about four hours of classroom lecture and two-to-three hours on the range. Basic firearm safety, the variety of handguns and how different types of actions work will be covered, along with ammunition, cleaning, storage and basic shooting techniques.

The Latte Lounge Oneonta Adult Summer Soccer League is securing teams and players for the upcoming season.

Hall of Famers to speak June 18

Tickets for the National Baseball Hall of Fame's June 18 Voices of the Game program are on sale.

The event, which is part of Hall of Fame Classic Weekend, will feature Hall of Famers Andre Dawson, Goose Gossage, Phil Niekro, Tony Perez, Jim Rice, Ozzie Smith and Dick Williams at 6 p.m. June 18.

Tickets are required and cost $10 for adults and $5 for children younger than age 12. Museum members may reserve spots immediately by calling the Hall's membership department at 607-547-0397.

Tickets also are still available for the third annual Hall of Fame Classic, a seven-inning exhibition game that will start at 2 p.m. on Father's Day, June 19. Classic tickets cost $12.50 for first- and third-base seats and $11 for outfield seats. The seven Hall of Famers who will participate in the June 18 Voices of the Game event will appear at the Classic.

Former big leaguers who have committed to the Classic are Frank Catalanotto, Steve Garvey, Bill Lee, Dale Murphy, Willie Wilson, Rick Wise and Dmitri Young.

The Hall of Fame Classic will be preceded by the Cooperstown Game Day Parade, which begins on Main Street in Cooperstown at noon June 19. The Legends Hitting Contest will follow at 1 p.m. June 19.

Youth soccer registration under way

Registration for the Fall Recreational Soccer program for area youths is open.

Registration forms are available through Oneonta's elementary schools and at Sport Tech. Students who will be in grades 1-6 in the fall of 2011 are eligible to participate.

Headwaters to hold soccer series

The 22nd annual Headwaters Summer Camp Series for area youth soccer players will begin with the Volkswagen of Oneonta Camp, which runs June 27-July 1 at Otego Elementary.

Boys and girls ages 7-17 may participate in the series, which also features team camps. Cost is $60 per week, which includes a T-shirt and a water bottle.

Camps run from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday each week.

Pigskin Classic set for Aug. 5-7

The 2011 Chenango County Pigskin Classic is accepting applications for its 7-on-7 youth football tournament, which runs Aug. 5-7 in North Norwich.

The 20-team event is open to youths ages 13-18, who will compete in divisions for ages 13-15 and 18-and-under.

Cost is $250 per team, with a minimum of 10 player and a maximum of 12. High school teams are welcome.

Unadilla Gun Show Aug. 14
