Otsego Amateur deadline is Saturday

The Oneonta Country Club will host the 35th annual Otsego County Amateur Golf Tournament, also known as the Atchinson Cup, from Aug. 25-26.

The tournament is open to all Otsego County residents and non-residents who own memberships at Otsego County golf courses.

Cost to enter the 36-hole tournament is $60 and includes greens fees at the par-72 OCC for both days. Entry deadline is Saturday.

Golfers will be placed in one of several flights based on handicap. Scratch golfers will compete in the championship flight. The top three players in each flight will receive awards. The winner of the championship flight will earn the Atchinson Cup.

Colonial Ridge to host tourney Saturday

Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens will host the New York Central Antique Stock Car Club Captain & Mate Tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The tournament, which has a shotgun start and two-player teams, is open to the public. Cost is $15 per player. Greens fees and carts are not included. For more information, call Colonial Ridge at 607-263-5291.

Polar Bear 5K slated for Saturday

The Goodyear Lake Polar Bear 5K Walk/Run will begin at 10:15 a.m. Saturday on Krol Field in Milford.

Trapper training course Sunday

The Davenport Center VFW will host a New York State Trapper Training Course from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Fan voting for Frick Award starts Monday

Online voting for fan selections for the 2013 Ford C. Frick Award ballot begins at 10 a.m. Monday on the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Facebook website, www.facebook.com/baseballhall.

The Frick Award is presented annually during Hall of Fame Induction Weekend for excellence in baseball broadcasting. A total of 222 people who have broadcast at least 10 consecutive years for a team or network are eligible for consideration in fan voting, which will end at 5 p.m. Sept. 7.

The top 40 vote-getters will advance to the Fan Finals to determine three of the 10 names that will comprise the ballot, which will be considered by the Frick Award Committee this fall. Bios of each eligible candidate will appear at www.baseballhall.org throughout the voting.

The second round of fan voting will run from Sept. 10-Oct. 5, at the Hall's website and Facebook page. The final ballot, featuring three fan selections and seven candidates determined by a Hall of Fame committee, will be announced Oct. 9.

The 2013 Frick Award winner will be selected by a 21-member electorate, with the winner to be announced at baseball's Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn., in early December. The Frick electorate includes all living Award winners and five historians/veteran media members appointed by the Hall.

OHS cross country to practice Monday

The Oneonta High varsity cross country team will begin practicing for the fall sports season at 4 p.m. Monday at the school's track.

OHS will begin modified practices Sept. 4 at the following times and sites.

Modified girls swimming, 9 a.m. at OHS.

Modified football, 2:30 p.m. at OHS.

Modified volleyball, 2:30 p.m. at Oneonta Middle.

Modified cross country, 3 p.m. at OHS track.

Modified boys soccer, 3:30 p.m. at Oneonta Middle.

Modified girls soccer, 3:30 p.m. at OHS.

To play a sport, athletes must sign up at the high school or the middle school nurse's office.

The annual French Woods 2-Man Invitational will run Aug. 25-26 at the French Woods Golf and Country Club in Hancock.

Bowling association to meet Tuesday

The Chen Del O USBC Association will hold its annual membership meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the River Bend Golf Course on Route 8, between South New Berlin and New Berlin.

Several committees will be appointed during the meeting, which will start an hour after the board of directors meet.

Revised tournament rules will be discussed, dates and locations will be determined, and an election of officers will take place. All bowlers are encouraged to attend.

Sidney to hold parent night Thursday

Sidney's athletic department will hold a parent night at 6 p.m. Thursday in the high school auditorium.

Videos on parenting an athlete and concussions will be shown, and the student-athlete's code of conduct will be discussed.

Student-athletes and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Ouleout to host tournament Aug. 26

Ouleout Creek Golf Course will host the 11th Heart of Gold Golf Tournament at 8 a.m. Aug. 26.

Cost is $50 per player for the captain-and-crew tournament and includes a greens fees, cart and lunch. Players will have a chance to win $5,000 for a hole-in-one as well as other prizes.

Proceeds will benefit local heart transplant recipients and the Center for Tissue and Organ Donation.

Oneonta Youth Football signups Aug. 27

Oneonta Youth Football signups, check-in and equipment distribution for all players will be held Aug. 27 at the Sixth Ward Booster Club playground.

Signups and check-in for players ages 8-9 run from 5:15-6:15 p.m., followed by players ages 10-12 from 6:15-7:15 p.m.

Players must be age 8 by Dec. 1, 2012, and cannot turn 13 before Sept. 1, 2012. Birth certificates and a $25 insurance fee are due at signups.

Golf tournament set for Aug. 29

Otsego and Delaware County Retired Teachers' Associations will host the third annual Not Going Back-to-School Golf Tournament on Aug. 29 at Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens.

All retired educators, school staff and their friends are invited to play in the captain-and-crew tournament, which opens with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m.

Cost is $37 and includes 18 holes, a cart, prizes and lunch. Colonial Ridge members will pay $27. Lunch only costs $13.

Arms fair to run Sept. 1-2

The Tremperskill Hunting and Fishing Club will sponsor an arms fair and sportsman show Sept. 1-2 at Fisk Auctions in Andes.

Showtimes are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 1 and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 2. Daily admission is $5 or $7 with one raffle book.

All firearms sales and NICS background checks must be conducted through available dealers inside the building. No private sales, trades or barters for firearms are allowed on the Fisk Auctions property.

Oneonta LL to offer fall baseball

Oneonta Little League will offer a fall baseball program for children ages 8-11 (as of May 1, 2012) on Saturdays from Sept. 8-Oct. 20.

Registration runs from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 5 at Doc Knapp Field. Players will be contacted by a coach Sept. 6 with team assignment, practice plans, etc.

Cost is $10 per player. Teams will play six to seven Saturday-afternoon games and may practice during the week. An occasional doubleheader is possible. Rainouts will not be rescheduled.

O-State baseball clinic Sept. 16

Oneonta State will host its annual fall high school baseball clinic from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 16 at Red Dragon Baseball Field.

Registration runs from 8-9 a.m. Cost is $75 per camper. Lunch is included.

The clinic, which is open only to high school players (classes of 2013-2016), will focus on offensive and primary position instruction in the morning and live game play in the afternoon.

Advanced registration with payment may be sent to: Head Coach Ben Grimm, SUNY Oneonta, Chase PE Building 102, Oneonta, NY 13820. Registration also will be accepted on the day of the clinic.

SUNY Cobleskill golf tourney Sept. 28

The SUNY Cobleskill Athletic Booster Club will host its inaugural Fighting Tigers Club Golf Tournament at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Cobleskill Golf & Country Club as part of the college's annual homecoming weekend festivities.

Cost to enter the two-person, best-ball tournament is $90 per person. Registration deadline is Sept. 14. The tournament field limited to 136 players.
