STAFF REPORT
Liam Heneghan had two goals and an assist to lead Cooperstown’s boys to a 3-1 Center State Conference soccer victory at Mount Markham on Monday.
Following a scoreless first half, the Redskins opened the scoring 12 minutes into the second half. On a restart, Heneghan chipped a pass into the box to Michael Rowley, who sent the ball back to Park Summers at the top of the 18-yard box. Summers one-timed it into the goal.
Heneghan then scored unassisted from the top of the box to make it 2-0 and again from close range off an assist from Summers to give the Redskins a 3-0 lead.
“We had to shoot from the outside,” said Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek, whose team outshot MM, 37-7. “Mount Markham played a heavy defensive game. They had more than six people in the box.”
Cooperstown (1-1, 1-0), a Section Three Class C finalist last season, travels to Waterville at 7 p.m. Friday.
Mount Markham (1-2) is 0-1 in league.
