OHS sports to start practice Monday

Oneonta High's fall sports programs will start practice on the following dates:

Varsity and JV football, 1 p.m. Monday at OHS; modified football, 2:30 p.m. Sept 4 at OHS.

Varsity cross country, 9 a.m. Aug. 20 at OHS track; modified cross country, 3 p.m. Sept. 4 at OHS track;Varsity and JV boys soccer, 6 p.m. Monday at OHS; modfield boys soccer, 3:30 p.m. Sept 4 at Oneonta Middle School field;Varsity volleyball, 2 p.m. Monday at OHS; JV volleyball, noon Monday at OHS; modifield volleyball, 2:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at Oneonta Middle School;Varsity and JV girls soccer, 5:30 p.m. Monday at OHS; modifield girls soccer, 3:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at OHS;Varsity golf, 1 p.m. Monday at Oneonta Country Club;Varsity girls swimming, 8 a.m. Tuesday at OHS; modified girls swimming, 9 a.m. Sept. 4 at OHS.

Anglers beat husband-wife team

Lynn Baciuska and Rob DeMott won the Susquehanna Bass Association's Stevens Hardware Open Bass Tournament this past Sunday on Goodyear Lake. The two filled the five-fish limit at 11.92 pounds for the victory.

Dave Hubbard and his wife, Kim, placed second with a limit of 11.46 pounds. That total included the lunker of the day, a 4.09-pound largemouth bass caught by Dave Hubbard.

Bob Luther and Jim Clement finished third at 11.28 pounds, followed by Anthony Konchar and Lou Falvo at 11.07. Steve Llewellyn had the big smallmouth of the day (1.92 pounds).

The SBA and the City of Oneonta will co-host the 55th annual Fishing Derby at Hodges Pond in Neahwa Park at 4 p.m. this Saturday.

The next SBA tournament is the Wiggins Tree Service Open, which is set for Aug. 19 on Cross Lake.

Milford Academy to open Aug. 25

Milford Academy in New Berlin will play all of its prep-school football games on the road this season, according to the 2012 schedule that appears on its website, milfordacademy.org.

Bill Chaplick will enter his 12th season as head coach with a 109-31 overall record.

The Falcons open the 2012 season at Hudson Valley at 2 p.m. Aug. 25. The rest of their 11-game schedule is as follows:

Sept. 2 at Tiffin; Sept. 9 at Wagner; Sept. 16 at Stevenson University; Sept. 23 at Merrimack; Sept. 30 at Yale; Oct. 5 at Army Prep; Oct. 15 at Delaware Valley; Oct. 21 at Princeton; Nov. 4 at Army JV; Nov. 16 at Navy JV.

O-State baseball clinic Sept. 16

Oneonta State will host its annual fall high school baseball clinic from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 16 at Red Dragon Baseball Field.

Registration runs from 8-9 a.m. Cost is $75 per camper. Lunch is included.

The clinic, which is open only to high school players (classes of 2013-2016), will focus on offensive and primary position instruction in the morning and live game play in the afternoon.

Advanced registration with payment may be sent to: Head Coach Ben Grimm, SUNY Oneonta, Chase PE Building 102, Oneonta, NY 13820. Registration also will be accepted on the day of the clinic.

Next Authors Series event Tuesday

The National Baseball Hall of Fame will continue its Authors Series at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Bullpen Theater.

The series features special lectures and book signings and is included with regular museum admission.

Tuesday's installment is "Fenway Park: The Centennial" by Saul Wisnia.

The series closes at 1 p.m. Aug. 28 with "Fenway Park: A Salute to the Coolest, Cruelest, Longest-Running Major League Baseball Stadium in America" by John Powers and Ron Driscoll.

Polar Bear 5K slated for Aug. 18

The Goodyear Lake Polar Bear 5K Walk/Run will begin at 10:15 a.m. Aug. 18 on Krol Field in Milford.

Registration runs from 8:30-10 a.m. Aug. 18. Entry fee is $20. Proceeds benefit the Goodyear Lake Polar Bear Jump.

Trapper training course Aug. 19

The Davenport Center VFW will host a New York State Trapper Training Course from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aug. 19.

Class is limited to 25 students, who should bring lunches and dress appropriately for the weather.

Caputo 5K set for Aug. 25

The Eddie Caputo Memorial 5K Walk/Run will begin at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 25 at St. Bartholomew's parish center in Norwich (81 E. Main St.).

Registration forms are available at NBT Bank locations, the Norwich YMCA, Pennysaver offices and online at stbartsnorwichny.com.

Oneonta Youth Football signups Aug. 27

Oneonta Youth Football signups, check-in and equipment distribution for all players will be held Aug. 27 at the Sixth Ward Booster Club playground.

Signups and check-in for players ages 8-9 run from 5:15-6:15 p.m., followed by ages 10-12 from 6:15-7:15 p.m.

Players must be age 8 by Dec. 1, 2012, and cannot turn 13 before Sept. 1, 2012. Birth certificates and a $25 insurance fee are due at signups.

Golf tournament set for Aug. 29

Otsego and Delaware County Retired Teachers' Associations will host the third annual Not Going Back-to-School Golf Tournament on Aug. 29 at Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens.

All retired educators, school staff and their friends are invited to play in the captain-and-crew tournament, which opens with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m.

Cost is $37 and includes 18 holes, a cart, prizes and lunch. Colonial Ridge members will pay $27. Lunch only costs $13.

Lifeguards to meet Sept. 5

SUNY Delhi will hold a mandatory training session for lifeguards and water safety instructors at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at Kunsela Hall Pool.

Participants should be ready to swim and must bring lifeguard certifications, fall 2012 schedules and three forms of identification.

SUNY Delhi also will host a Swimming & Diving Team Interest Meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 in the lounge next to the pool.

Swimming lessons begin Sept. 22

SUNY Delhi will host swimming lessons from Sept. 22-Nov. 10.

The 45-minute lessons will run from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 22 and 29; Oct. 13, 20 and 27; and Nov. 3 and 10. These dates are subject to change because of a potential conflict with college swim meets.

Classes include Red Cross Levels I-VI, Infant/Toddler/Preschool Group and Adult Classes & Diving.

Registration runs from 8 a.m.-noon Sept. 15 at SUNY Delhi's Kunsela Hall Pool. Cost is $45 per swimmer and is due at registration.
