Season ends for Post 259

Oneonta Post 259 was eliminated on the second day of the New York State American Legion Baseball Tournament, falling, 7-3, to Jurek Post on Thursday morning at Murnane Field in Utica.

The Buffalo-area squad scored three runs in the eighth inning to snap a 3-all tie. Oneonta's loss Thursday came on the heels of an 11-3 loss to defending state champion Whitestown on Wednesday in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.

"It was a successful season," said Oneonta coach Mike Jester, whose team qualified for the state meet by winning its second District Six title in four years last weekend. "We came up a little short. We didn't play as well as we could, but it certainly wasn't for a lack of effort. Baseball is a funny game and we didn't play that well. We'll look forward to defending our district title next year."

Losing pitcher Mike Calkins (6-3) lasted one batter into the eighth inning. With the score tied at 3, Calkins walked the first batter of the eighth before being relieved by David Wright. Matt Notaro then hit an RBI double down the right-field line. After a sacrifice, Pete Elliott's RBI triple made it 5-3.

Winning pitcher Eric Stolzenburg limited the Green Wave to five hits in a complete game. He struck out 13 and walked three.

"He threw a lot of pitches," Jester said. "He was a big left-hander with a decent fastball."

Oneonta opened the scoring in the first inning, when Ben Moxley reached on an error and took second on a passed ball. He scored on a two-out, RBI double by Sean Getman.

After Jurek scored twice in the top of the fourth, Oneonta tied it in the bottom of the inning. Getman led off with a triple but was thrown out at home when he tried to score on Dan Hodne's grounder to third. Hodne stole second and came around to score when Zach Pidgeon's flyball to left field was dropped.

Pidgeon's two-out, RBI single in the sixth inning tied the score at 3.

The Green Wave had a chance to take the lead in the seventh. Ryne Rivino reached on an error, Moxley singled to right field with one out and Getman walked to load the bases. But Calkins struck out and Hodne flew out.

Calkins, headed Division II University of Tampa in the fall, allowed four runs _ three earned _ on five hits over seven-plus innings. He struck out eight and walked four.

"He went to a bunch of 3-2 counts and ran up his pitch count," Jester said. "His fastball was good today, but he didn't have a good offspeed pitch."

Getman finished with three hits.

The Green Wave finished the season at 25-12, with many of the same players who helped Oneonta High to a 24-2 spring season that resulted in the program's first state title.

Jester said he expects pitchers Calkins, Moxley, Wright and Mark Giallanzo to be back next season. All four will have completed their freshman years in college. Reigning Class B state Player of the Year Moxley is going to Herkimer County CC, Giallanzo is heading to Mohawk Valley CC, and Wright will play for Erie CC.

"We could be dangerous and we look forward to it," Jester said.
