{"HeadlineLight14"/}Stone to MC at Soccer inductions

Rob Stone, who announces for ABC and ESPN, will be the master of ceremonies at the 2009 National Soccer Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, the Oneonta-based shrine announced Monday.

The Soccer Hall of Fame will induct Joy Fawcett and Jeff Agoos at 11 a.m. Aug. 2. Fawcett and Agoos were the top two vote-getters in the 2009 Player Election.

Stone, who attended Colgate University, has served as a play-by-play announcer and as a studio host for ABC/ESPN's coverage of Major League Soccer. He has announced several MLS Cups, the Confederations Cup and the past three FIFA World Cups.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Soccer officials meeting tonight

A meeting for those interested in officiating high school soccer this fall will be held at 6:30 tonight at the Oneonta YMCA.

The meeting will cover many aspects of officiating. No equipment or uniforms are necessary.

The Cooperstown Soccer Club will close its 2009 fall recreational soccer registrations Saturday.

Youths from Cooperstown, Edmeston and Cherry Valley in kindergarten through sixth grade are eligible to register via the website www.coopsoccerclub.com. Paper registrations are available by calling CSC registrar Alicia Chase at 607-293-8463.

    HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL ... ONEONTA _ Kelsey Baker hears voices in her head, but only when she's at the foul line. "I hear everyone in the background and stuff," Oneonta High junior forward Baker said Monday night, "but mainly, it's just me, the ball and the basket. You've just got to make them." Junior forward Baker made five clutch free throws in a row in the fourth quarter, when she scored seven of her team-high 11 points to lead host Oneonta High to a 35-27 girls basketball victory over Norwich.

    HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP ... Brandon Fallon capped his 14-point night on a layup with about 40 seconds left that provided the winning points in Edmeston's 54-52 Tri-Valley League boys basketball victory at Richfield Springs on Monday.

  • O-State coach, Unatego AD takes job in Fla.

    The recent departure of Bill May left vacancies at Oneonta State and the Unatego School District. May, 47, was announced as Southeastern University's women's tennis coach Friday. He'll also be the school's men's tennis coach the following season when that program begins its first season. May spent seven seasons as the men's and women's tennis coach at Oneonta State. He served as athletic director at Unatego the last two seasons.

    COLLEGE ROUNDUP ... Hartwick College's 13th-ranked women's water polo went 2-1 Saturday, including the program's 300th victory. The Hawks opened their season with a 20-5 loss to seventh-ranked UC-Irvine but bounced back with a 14-11 overtime win against No. 20 CSU-Northridge in games played at Riverside, Calif. They capped the day with a 14-9 triumph at the University of Redlands, marking their 300th win.
