{"HeadlineLight14"/}SUNY Delhi runner honored

SUNY Delhi cross country and track standout Chris Mason earned recognition as the NJCAA Male Student-Athlete of the Year, the college announced Wednesday.

A seven-time All-American, Mason is the first runner in NJCAA history to receive the David Rowlands Award. The Auburn native and recent business administration graduate has signed an NCAA letter of intent with Middle Tennessee University.

Mason is the only male athlete to win two consecutive NJCAA Division III cross country championships. He also won NJCAA D-III outdoor track titles in the 10,000-meter run (2008, 2009) and the 5,000 (2008 and 2009). Mason holds championship-meet records in the 10,000 (32:12:32) and the 5,000 (15:15:15).

Mason received athlete of the year honors fro Delhi in 2008 and 2009.

Franklin resident Verna Engstrom-Heg and Chuck Hudson of Cooperstown combined to win seven swimming events at the Empire State Senior Games, which ran June 2-7 in Cortland.

Engstrom-Heg won three freestyles (500, 200, 100 yards) and two backstrokes (200, 100). Hudson placed first in the 400 and 100 breaststrokes.

The two went on to swim at the June 12-13 Massachusetts Senior Games in Springfield, Mass. Engstrom-Heg won the 400 and 200 frees and the 200 and 50 backstrokes. Hudson took first in the 200 and 100 breaststrokes.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Afton Speedway to open July 10

Afton Motor Speedway co-promoter Joanne Rocket announced Thursday that its 2009 season opener has moved from today to July 10.

The speedway will host a practice session that had been scheduled for June 26 at 4 p.m. today, Rocket said. General admission is free. Pit passes cost $15.

Rocket, who promotes the track with her husband, Dave, cited poor weather as the main reason for the delays. Opening night will take place during Afton Fair Week. Gates open at 4 p.m. July 10, with warm-ups to start at 6 p.m. and racing to begin at 7 p.m. The show will feature sportsman, IMCA modified, street stock, pure stock and four-cylinder races.

The first Hometown Deli & Grocery Round Robin Doubles Tennis Tournament runs Monday through July 12 at the George R. Waddington Tennis Courts in Wilber Park.

The Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown will host an Ultimate Frisbee clinic from 9:30-11:30 a.m. July 11. Registration begins at 9 a.m. for the clinic, which is open to players of all ages and skill. Cost is $5 per person. Parents must sign consent forms for minors. The first 30 to register will receive free official discs.

Tsuga Links Golf Course in New Berlin will host a captain-and-mate tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The day will feature breakfast from 8 a.m.-noon, a noon barbecue, hiking and open fishing. Cost for the tournament is $40 per team.

Tsuga Links also will host a couples captain-and-mate at 9 a.m. July 12 ($20 per team); a singles scratch event at 9 a.m. July 19 ($20 per person); and a captain-and-crew at 9 a.m. July 25 ($40 per team).

The Otsego Sailing Club in Cooperstown will offer sailing lessons this summer.

The first session of the junior program (ages 10-17) runs from 9-11:30 a.m. Monday-July 17. Hours are the same for the second junior session, which is set for July 20-31. Adult lessons will run during a two-week span beginning July 6. Sessions are 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays or 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Hartwick College will host the Junior Hawks Soccer Camp for youths ages 6-13 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The Headwaters Soccer Club Summer Camp Series for youths ages 7-17 continues Monday.

Cost is $60 per week and includes a T-shirt and a water bottle for each participant. Each camp runs from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Oneonta Country Club's Junior Golf Program begins continues July 10 and 17. A tournament and banquet follows July 31.

Instruction for youths ages 7-9 starts at 8:15 a.m.; ages 10-12 at 9:15 a.m.; and ages 13-17 at 10:15 a.m.

The 44th annual Delaware County Men's Amateur Golf Tournament will run July 10-13 at the par-72 Delhi College Golf Course.

The tournament will feature a championship division and five handicapped flights. Cost is $100 to compete in the tournament, which is open to members of Delaware County golf courses and Delaware County residents. The Oneonta Elks Club 1312 will host its annual Gallagher Golf Tournament at 1 p.m. July 11 at the Oneonta Country Club.

The captain-and-crew event, which is open to the public, features four-person teams and has a shotgun start. Cost is $50 per person and includes green fees, cart and a post-tournament chicken barbecue-and-rib dinner at the Elks Club. All proceeds will benefit the Elks National Foundation Scholarship Program.

Cooperstown Central's Athletic Hall of Fame will host a benefit captain-and-crew golf tournament July 11 at the Meadowlinks Golf Club.

The Otsego County Cornell Cooperative Extension will host a Reality Check teen night when the Oneonta Tigers host the Tri-City ValleyCats at 7:05 p.m. July 11 at Damaschke Field.

General admission will be half-price at $3 per ticket. The Reality Check teens will promote the anti-tobacco night by handing out tips to quit smoking and sponsoring games. The seventh annual Father Whalen Golf Tournament is set for a 10 a.m. shotgun start July 17 at the Stamford Golf Club.

Cost for the scramble event is $95 per player. Sponsor costs are $250 for tees and driving range and $100 for carts. Cost to be a supreme sponsor is $1,500.

Hurley's Heroes Track Club of Oneonta will continue its Twilight Track and Field Meets at Oneonta State at 7 p.m. July 21 and Aug. 11.

The Oneonta State women's basketball team will host a developmental overnight/commuter camp for girls ages 10-18 from July 19-23.

The camp, designed to develop fundamentals, begins at 6 p.m. July 19 and ends at 4 p.m. July 23.

Cost is $375 per overnight camper and $300 per commuter. A $10 discount is available to groups of five or more from the same school who register together.

Payment is due at registration, along with health and registration forms and emergency contact information. Deadline to register is July 5.

Duathlon scheduled for Aug. 2

The first Delhi Dolphins Splash 'N Dash Swim/Run Duathlon starts at 9 a.m. Aug. 2 at the SUNY Delhi College Pool. Registration runs from 8-8:45 a.m. on Aug. 2.

Athletes can participate in the following events:

The "10-and-10" is open to youths ages 12-and-younger and counts pool laps completed in 10 minutes then the number of laps run around a 200-meter course in 10 minutes. Youths can compete in one or both parts. Two-person teams are welcome.

The "Swim/Run Duathlon" is open to all ages and features a 400-yard swim followed by a 2-mile loop run on the campus. Two-person teams are welcome.

The Oneonta State men's soccer team will host a summer soccer camp at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta from Aug. 3-7.

The Dragon Camp is for youths ages 6-14 and runs 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. The Elite Camp is for high school players and runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily.

The Oneonta Family YMCA will hold a 1-mile, 2-mile and half-mile open-water swim at Gilbert Lake on Aug. 8.

Check-in runs from 7:30-8:30 a.m., with a mandatory pre-race meeting to follow. The 1- and 2-mile swims start at 9 a.m. The half-mile swim begins at 9:15 a.m.

The event is open to the public, but those younger than 13 must have competency verified in writing and signed by a non-parent coach or swim instructor.

Entry fee is $25 and includes lunch. A limited number of T-shirts are available for purchase at $15 each. Applications are available at the Oneonta Family YMCA. Entry deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 6. Thereafter, registrations will be assessed a $10 late fee.

The first Owen Banks Memorial Flag Football Tournament is scheduled for Aug. 22-23 at Austin Lincoln Fields in Walton.

The event, also known as the Bubba Bowl, will feature 5-on-5 play for adults ages 18-and-older. Each member of the winning team will receive T-shirts and trophies.

Cost is $100 per team. All proceeds will benefit HALos, a not-for-profit bereavement counseling agency. Fees and rosters must be submitted by 5 p.m. Aug. 3.

License age, price to go up

The eligibility age and cost for lifetime senior sportsman licenses will increase Oct. 1, the Town of Oneonta announced Wednesday.

On Oct. 1, the age will move from 65 to 70 and the price will increase from $50 to $65. Senior lifetime sportsman licenses cover hunting (small/big game, turkey), fishing and a waived application fee for deer management permits.
