Green Wave edged on road

Conor Youngs struck out four and walked one for Oneonta Post 259 in a 3-2 Legion baseball loss at St. Johnsville on Monday.

Oneonta held a 2-1 lead with two out in the last inning before St. Johnsville rallied with two straight singles that chased Youngs. St. Johnsville followed with two more singles off reliever Jack Benjamin for the win.

The Green Wave (13-9) took a 2-0 lead into the sixth, but St. Johnsville cut its deficit in half as Youngs (2-1) gave up a home run to Josh Nethaway.

Benjamin doubled and singled for Oneonta, which received a double from Nate Eastman.

On Sunday, the Green Wave dropped a doubleheader at Ilion. Oneonta lost the opener, 5-4 in eight innings, and followed with a 13-8 setback in the second game.

Jeff Wiltsie tripled and doubled in Sunday's first game for Oneonta, which got two doubles from Matt Marcewicz. Losing pitcher Mike Tietjen (2-3) struck out four and walked one in a nine-hitter, but Ilion won on a walkoff single by Ken Nicolette with two out in the eighth.

Eric Scorzafava had three hits, Eastman doubled twice and Brenden Wolfanger contributed two hits in the second game for the Green Wave, who play Sidney at Unatego today.

    HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL ... ONEONTA _ Kelsey Baker hears voices in her head, but only when she's at the foul line. "I hear everyone in the background and stuff," Oneonta High junior forward Baker said Monday night, "but mainly, it's just me, the ball and the basket. You've just got to make them." Junior forward Baker made five clutch free throws in a row in the fourth quarter, when she scored seven of her team-high 11 points to lead host Oneonta High to a 35-27 girls basketball victory over Norwich.

    HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP ... Brandon Fallon capped his 14-point night on a layup with about 40 seconds left that provided the winning points in Edmeston's 54-52 Tri-Valley League boys basketball victory at Richfield Springs on Monday.

  • O-State coach, Unatego AD takes job in Fla.

    The recent departure of Bill May left vacancies at Oneonta State and the Unatego School District. May, 47, was announced as Southeastern University's women's tennis coach Friday. He'll also be the school's men's tennis coach the following season when that program begins its first season. May spent seven seasons as the men's and women's tennis coach at Oneonta State. He served as athletic director at Unatego the last two seasons.
