O-Tigers stumble

The offensive surge didn't last long for the Oneonta Tigers.

Oneonta left nine runners on base and went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position in a 5-0 New York-Penn League loss to the Lowell Spinners in front of 452 fans at Damaschke Field on Monday night.

The start of the game was delayed for about an hour because of rain.

Oneonta scored a season-high nine runs Sunday in a 9-3 victory over the Spinners.

The O-Tigers (5-4) and Lowell (5-6) finish their three-game series at 7:05 tonight. Adam Wilk is scheduled to start for Oneonta, which then hits the road for a three-game set at Aberdeen, beginning at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.

The Tigers return home to play the IronBirds for three games, starting at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.

Monday's setback dropped the Tigers into a first-place tie atop the Stedler Division with Tri-City (5-4), which beat Vermont, 4-3.

Nathan Newman (0-1) suffered the loss for Oneonta. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over three innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Lowell scored one run in each of the first, second, fourth, fifth and eighth innings.

The Spinners took a 1-0 lead in the first when Shannon Wilkerson reached on a throwing error by third baseman Wade Gaynor, scoring Derrik Gibson.

Gibson (3-for-3) also had an RBI double in the second inning to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead.

Lowell made it 3-0 in the fourth on an RBI single from Gibson. Joantoni Garcia had a run-scoring single in the fifth inning and capped the scoring when William Holmes grounded out with bases loaded in the eighth inning to score Wilfred Pichardo.

Oneonta's biggest chance came in the third. John Murrian, Jim Gulliver and Jamie Johnson all had singles to load the bases with one out, but Alden Carrithers struck out looking and Gaynor grounded out to second to end the inning.

Murrian finished with two hits to lead the O-Tigers, who had seven hits.
