Mike Calkins struck out 10 in a five-hitter and Oneonta Post 259 rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to beat the host Anaconda Indians, 3-1, in a non-league Legion baseball game Wednesday.
Ryne Rivino started Oneonta's rally in the seventh with a lined single to center with one out off of starting pitcher Joe Butler. Losing pitcher Casey Marvell relieved Butler and David Wright hit a grounder to short that forced Rivino at second. Wright just beat the throw to first, avoiding a game-ending double play.
Ben Moxley's single to right sent Wright to third.
Then Sean Getman, who had two hits to that point, drew a walk to load the bases.
Joe Korszun relieved Marvell and gave up back-to-back walks to Zach Pidgeon and Dan Hodne, which gave Oneonta a 2-1 lead. Getman scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
"We were a little dejected yesterday," Oneonta coach Mike Jester said of his team's 7-5 loss at Hancock on Tuesday. "Baseball is a funny game. We had one of those games. We showed a lot of character today rallying against one of the top teams in New York state."
The Indians, based in Scotia, won the state Legion title in 2008.
Calkins (2-0) had one walk.
"He had good command of both pitches," Jester said of Calkins, who earned the pitching victory in Oneonta High's 8-4 Class B state semifinal win over Wayland-Cohocton and hit the go-ahead home run in the Yellowjackets' 2-0 over Briarcliff in the state final two Saturdays ago at Conlon Field in Binghamton. "His fastball was maybe not the best velocity I've seen from him, but it was good. It was the best curveball I've seen him throw all year."
Oneonta (6-3), which received two hits from Moxley, travels to Ilion on Saturday for a doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m.
