Two big returns, a 62-yarder on a kickoff by Anthony Delgado and a 36-yard punt return by Taharen Williams, set up fourth-quarter touchdowns as Oneonta High won its season opener, 40-27, at Greene on Friday in a non-division Section Four Football Conference game.
After the Trojans scored late in the third quarter to tie the score at 20, Delgado started up the middle with his return before racing down the right sideline to Greene's 31.
Four runs by Bryce Wooden, including a 24-yarder, produced the go-ahead score. Wooden scored from the 1 and Keegan Trombley hit Jacob Mykytyn on a two-point pass to give the Yellowjackets a 28-20 lead.
Oneonta stopped Greene on its next possession and Williams returned a short punt to Greene's 13. Two plays later, Trombley scored from 8 yards as Oneonta's lead grew to 34-20.
Greene cut it to 34-27 on a 29-yard touchdown run, but Wooden answered with a 15-yard rushing touchdown to cap the scoring.
"Offensively, we looked sharp," said OHS coach Adam Hoover, who earned Daily Star co-Coach of the Year honors in 2009 for leading the Jackets to a 5-4 record and a Section Four Class B playoff berth for the first time since 2002.
First-year quarterback Trombley rushed for 106 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns. He also completed seven of 16 passes for 74 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.
"I knew he was capable of getting that kind of rushing yardage," Hoover said of Trombley, a senior. "If something wasn't there, he was pulling it down and running. It's tough to defend when a quarterback can run as well as he did."
Trombley opened the scoring on a 12-yard run in the first quarter to make it 6-0. Scott Conrade had an 8-yard scoring run in the second quarter as Oneonta took a 12-0 lead.
Following a Greene touchdown, Trombley hit Mike Gilmore on a 24-yard scoring pass in the third quarter. Mykytyn's two-point run made it 20-7.
Mykytyn had 71 rushing yards, 2 more than Wooden.
Hoover said the play of inside linebackers Wooden and Dakota Smith stood out.
"They shut down the run between the tackles," Hoover said of Wooden and Smith. "(The Trojans) had an athletic quarterback, but they didn't have much success running the ball."
Oneonta travels to Sidney at 7 p.m. Friday.
