Balance leads Oneonta High boys soccer to 3-0 victory over Chenango Valley

STAFF REPORT

---- —

Oneonta High shared the wealth Friday as six boys soccer players earned points in a 3-0 Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory at Chenango Valley.

Dan Joseph, Aaron Foreman and Eric Deemer scored for the Yellowjackets (2-0, 2-0), who received assists from Connor Shearer, Sean Murphy and Matt Arcidiacono. First-year starting goalie Zach Erbe made three saves for OHS, which held advantages of 12-3 in shots and 10-3 in corner kicks.

"We graduated a few kids, but we didn't lose many of our midfielders," said OHS coach Alex Brannan, The Daily Star's Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Yellowjackets to a Section Four Class B title. "We lost one (starter) at every position, basically. ... I'm going to have to maneuver guys around. I don't have the right combination yet, but I'll find it."

In the meantime, Brannan had to settle for Oneonta's second straight 3-0 victory. The Jackets beat Seton Catholic Central by the same score Wednesday, when they opened the season at the Wright National Soccer Campus.

On Friday, Joseph scored into an open net after Connor Shearer forced CV goalie Kevin Mack to play out of position. Eric Deemer sent a long pass from the right side to Shearer on the left. Shearer then dribbled toward the goal and, as Mack came out to cut his angle, passed to the middle for a wide-open Joseph for a 1-0 lead about 8 minutes into the match.

Foreman sent a pass from Sean Murphy into the top-left corner to close the first-half scoring and Deemer volleyed a ball from Matt Arcidiacono into the upper-right corner in the second half. Mack finished with seven saves for the Warriors (3-1, 1-1).

OHS will host Chenango Forks on Wednesday and visit Windsor on Thursday. Brannan said his team picked up a non-league game against Unatego because there will not be a high school version of the annual Mayor's Cup this season. OHS will host the Spartans on Sept. 11 as a result.

Girls Soccer

Memo to Southern Tier Athletic Conference girls soccer teams: Oneonta High appears to be very good this season.

Two days after a season-opening, 8-0 victory over Seton Catholic Central, the Yellowjackets traveled to Chenango Valley put a similar pounding on the Warriors.

And get this, because of a new STAC rule that prohibits teams from playing when the heat index hits 96 degrees or higher, Friday's game ended with 24 minutes, 54 seconds remaining.

"We knew we were going to be good and we are good," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said. "We have a lot of different people contributing and a lot of different finishers. That part is encouraging. We have a lot of different pieces."

Karsen Shultz scored two goals, and Dani Nicosia, Sienna Wisse, Cami Cleaveland, Brianna Georgia and Alex Graig-Tiso contributed one goal apiece.

Shultz opened the scoring nine minutes into play, finishing a crossing pass from Wisse in the box. Seven minutes later, Georgia scored off an assist from Jen Jelic to make it 2-0. OHS led, 4-0, at halftime.

"We're still relatively young," said Mackey, whose team went 10-5-1 last season. "We start a freshman and five sophomores, but we have experience. We also start four unselfish seniors (Wisse, Erin Wolstenholme, Leah Elsbeck and Josephine Sloman)."

Wolstenholme finished with five saves for OHS, which had a 24-6 advantage in shots.

The Yellowjackets (2-0, 2-0) travel to Windsor on Tuesday. Mackey said he'll know about his team Thursday, when OHS goes to Chenango Forks, which is coming off a 16-3-1 season
