Fall baseball registration Tuesday

Oneonta Little League will hold registration for fall baseball from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Doc Knapp Field in Oneonta.

Players born between May 1, 1998 and April 30, 2002 who live within the Oneonta Little League boundaries are may sign up for fall baseball, which is free.

NYPA to offer bow-hunting permits

The New York Power Authority will offer 100 bow-hunting permits for designated areas around its Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project during the 2010 hunting season, which runs Oct. 19-Dec. 21.

Permits will be selected by lottery. For a lottery application, call 800-724-0309 or write to New York Power Authority, 1378 State Route 30, P.O. Box 898, North Blenheim, NY 12131.

Completed applications must be returned to NYPA by Sept. 25. The drawing will be held Sept. 28. Permits will be mailed to lottery winners.

Applicants must have the bow hunters' proficiency certification to participate in the lottery. Department of Environmental Conservation-certified Bow Hunter Education Instructors will offer the proficiency examination from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center.

Local teams to host golf events

The Schenevus softball team will host its fifth annual captain-and-crew golf tournament at 8 a.m. Sept. 25 at the Stamford Golf Course.

Cost is $200 per foursome and includes food at the turn, lunch and prizes. For more information or to sign up, call Jen Pier at 607-397-8230.

 The Worcester baseball and girls basketball programs will host their second annual captain-and-crew tournament at 8 a.m. Oct. 3 at the Ouleout Creek Golf Course in North Franklin. Dawson to appear at Hall on Oct. 9

National Baseball Hall of Famer Andre Dawson will return to the Cooperstown shrine Oct. 9 to participate in a Legends Series event at the Grandstand Theater.

Eight-time All-Star Dawson, a Baseball Writers' Association of America selection who was inducted July 25, will speak during the 11 a.m. event, which is part of the Hall's third-annual salute to character and courage.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for youths under 12. Tickets are available to museum members starting Sept. 13 by calling 607-547-0397.

Remaining tickets, if any, will go on sale to the general public Oct. 4.

Hall to host Latin American tribute

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will present a film-reel tribute to Latin American baseball Saturday.

The Hall will host a screening of "SPACEMAN: A Baseball Odyssey" as part of the presentation at 1 p.m. in the Museum's Bullpen Theater. The 2006 Baseball Film Festival selection, on former big league pitcher Bill "Spaceman" Lee and his baseball journey to Cuba, will be part of a reel dedicated to Latin American baseball.

Area bowling leagues start soon

Several area bowling leagues have openings for their 2010 seasons, which are slated to begin this month.

 The Scho-Del Thursday Night Men's Bowling League at Vasta's Miracle Lanes in Stamford is looking for bowlers for the upcoming season.

 The Fraternal Bowling League has openings for Friday evenings starting this Friday. The handicap league is accepting new four-person teams and individuals of all skill levels. To join or for more information, call league secretary Jerry Blechman at 607-433-1770 or e-mail jbblechman@gmail.com.

 The TGIF bowling league will start its fall season with a meeting at 6:30 p.m. this Friday, followed by bowling. Existing teams and new members are welcome. Four-person teams may be all men, all women or mixed. To join the league, call Jan Harrison at 607-441-3303.

 The Sunday Night Mess bowling league will start at 7 p.m. Sept. 12. This handicapped mixed league features four-person teams (men, women or both) and bowls every Sunday night. For more information, call Deb Trask at 607-432-2975 or Rick Scheiner at 607-638-5442 for more information.

Golf tournament Sept. 11 at Ouleout

The Oneonta Professional Firefighters Local 2408 will host its second annual golf tournament at 9 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Ouleout Creek Golf Course in North Franklin.

Cost is $60 per person for the captain-and-crew event, which includes 18 holes, lunch from Brooks', prizes and raffles. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Oneonta Little League's Doc Knapp Field.

Lower Deck Dash set for Sept. 12

The annual Lower Deck Dash 5-kilometer Fun Run fundraiser will begin at noon Sept. 12 at the 6th Ward playground on Scramling Ave. in Oneonta.

Raceday registration runs from 9:30-11:30 a.m. T-shirt and pre-registration deadline is Aug. 27. Applications are available at the Oneonta Family YMCA and Sport Tech.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the 6th Ward playground.

Woodhaven tourney set for Sept. 18

The Woodhaven Golf Course in West Oneonta will hold a one-day member-guest tournament Sept. 18.

Bowhunter class scheduled for Sept. 19

The SUNY Delhi Turf Education Center will host a free Delaware County Bowhunter Education Class from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sept. 19.

Students must pre-register and get a free copy of the "Today's Bowhunter" manual at Borow's Taxidermy on Route 28 in Delhi.

Students should read the manual and complete chapter review exercises before taking the course. Class size is limited to 40 students, who should bring their own lunches.

Students also may complete a free online course at www.bowhunter-ed.com/ny/index.htm. The online course is for preparation purposes only and does not replace the Sept. 19 class.

    HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL ... ONEONTA _ Kelsey Baker hears voices in her head, but only when she's at the foul line. "I hear everyone in the background and stuff," Oneonta High junior forward Baker said Monday night, "but mainly, it's just me, the ball and the basket. You've just got to make them." Junior forward Baker made five clutch free throws in a row in the fourth quarter, when she scored seven of her team-high 11 points to lead host Oneonta High to a 35-27 girls basketball victory over Norwich.

    HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP ... Brandon Fallon capped his 14-point night on a layup with about 40 seconds left that provided the winning points in Edmeston's 54-52 Tri-Valley League boys basketball victory at Richfield Springs on Monday.

  • O-State coach, Unatego AD takes job in Fla.

    The recent departure of Bill May left vacancies at Oneonta State and the Unatego School District. May, 47, was announced as Southeastern University's women's tennis coach Friday. He'll also be the school's men's tennis coach the following season when that program begins its first season. May spent seven seasons as the men's and women's tennis coach at Oneonta State. He served as athletic director at Unatego the last two seasons.
