Sidney tennis opens with win

Jileen Livingston's 6-4, 6-4 victory over Lindsay Avolio at first singles helped host Sidney to a 4-1 Midstate Athletic Conference girls tennis victory over Unadilla Valley in its season opener Thursday.

The Warriors also received singles wins from Livingston's sister Carly and Mina Hoblitz. Anne Pysnik and Samantha Butcher contributed a triumph at first doubles for Sidney, which went 10-2 under Annie Gordon-Muller last fall.

Loraine Flyzik takes over the Warriors this season. Flyzik, who has coached Sidney's boys since 2006, coached the girls program from 1986-2000. Sidney is at Greene on Wednesday.

UV avoided the shutout when Kyra Wright and Haley Benson won at second doubles.

Kristen Audas outlasted Rachel Holden at first singles, 6-3, 7-5, and visiting Oxford swept doubles play for a MAC victory.

Beth Patterson and Tasha Lynn earned points for Walton (0-1, 0-1) with singles victories. The Warriors visit Hancock today.

Oxford (2-0) plays Delhi on Wednesday.

Kim Cordova had nine digs and five aces as Oneonta opened the season with a Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory on the road.

Brianna Ferchen contributed nine kills for the Yellowjackets, who received 16 assists from Calla Losie.

Oneonta (1-0, 1-0) hosts Chenango Forks at 5 p.m. Thursday. Oneonta coach Lee Ferrara said weekday games will start at 5 p.m. this year.

Erin Butler and Jessica Fisher scored 50 seconds apart early in the second half to give Walton a 3-1 lead, and the Warriors held on to win the consolation game of the Windsor Tournament.

Butler converted a pass from Mikaelan Cucciarre-Stuligross nine minutes into the second half to snap a 1-all tie. Fisher then scored from 10 yards off an Ashley Mills pass.

Spencer-Van Etten's Char Kibbe capped the scoring with 12 minutes to play.

Bridgette Fletcher and Chelsey Wheeler earned all-tournament selections for the Warriors (1-1), who play Harpursville on Tuesday.
