Oneonta sweeps, stays in first

Rawley Bishop's RBI single in the eighth inning led the Oneonta Tigers to a 3-2 New York-Penn League victory over the visiting Williamsport Crosscutters on Friday night.

The O-Tigers (32-25) completed a three-game sweep of the Crosscutters (33-27) in front of an announced crowd of 401 at Damaschke Field.

Oneonta opens a key two-game set with Lowell at 5:05 p.m. Saturday. The teams then play at 1:35 p.m. Sunday. The O-Tigers and Lowell (33-26) are tied atop the Stedler Division. The Spinners won, 16-7, at home Friday against Auburn.

On Monday, the O-Tigers visit Staten Island to start at three-day series that will begin with the completion of a suspended game. Rain ended their Aug. 9 meeting at Damaschke Field with the score tied at 6 in the bottom of the 11th inning. The suspended game will resume with runners on first and second, none out and Bishop batting for Oneonta.

On Friday, Michael Rockett opened the eighth with a triple to right off losing pitcher Luke Wertz (2-1). Bishop followed with a go-ahead single for the final margin.

Kenny Faulk earned his ninth save by working a perfect ninth.

He struck out Francisco Murillo and Adam Buschini swinging, then got Michael Dabbs to fly out to left to end it.

Oneonta starter Clemente Mendoza received a no-decision after throwing 6 1/3 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking one. Jose Ortega (2-2) earned the victory in 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief.

The O-Tigers opened the scoring in the first. Jamie Johnson walked and advanced to third when Rockett singled to center. After Bishop popped out to first, Rockett stole second. John Murrian then grounded out to third, scoring Johnson for a 1-0 lead.

Williamsport tied it in the second. Buschini hit a one-out triple to center and scored when Dabbs grounded out to second.

The Tigers went up, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning. Wade Gaynor tripled to right and _ after Matt Mansilla flied out to right _ scored on a bloop-single to left by Carmelo Jaime.

The Crosscutters got their second run in the sixth. Carl Uhl singled to lead off and stole second when Alan Schoenberger struck out. Uhl went to third on an error by shortstop Jimmy Gulliver and scored when Darin Ruf doubled.

Rockett and Bishop had two hits apiece to lead the O-Tigers.

"I hear everyone in the background and stuff," Oneonta High junior forward Baker said Monday night, "but mainly, it's just me, the ball and the basket. You've just got to make them." Junior forward Baker made five clutch free throws in a row in the fourth quarter, when she scored seven of her team-high 11 points to lead host Oneonta High to a 35-27 girls basketball victory over Norwich.

    The recent departure of Bill May left vacancies at Oneonta State and the Unatego School District. May, 47, was announced as Southeastern University's women's tennis coach Friday. He'll also be the school's men's tennis coach the following season when that program begins its first season. May spent seven seasons as the men's and women's tennis coach at Oneonta State. He served as athletic director at Unatego the last two seasons.
