John Murrian had an RBI double in the sixth inning Sunday, but the Oneonta Tigers fell, 2-1, in a New York-Penn League game at Brooklyn.
The O-Tigers, held to four hits, head into the league All-Star break with seven losses in their last 10 games. Oneonta (29-25) trails Lowell (31-25) by one game in the Stedler Division standings. The Spinners lost, 4-2, to Mahoning Valley on Sunday.
The State College Spikes will host the NY-Penn All-Star Game at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Oneonta received a fifth All-Star selection for the American League affiliates over the weekend as Carmelo Jaime will replace Mahoning Valley's Kyle Smith at shortstop. O-Tigers General Manager Andrew Weber said Smith is injured.
Jaime joins first baseman Rawley Bishop, outfielder Michael Rockett, catcher Murrian and pitcher Kenny Faulk.
The two-day All-Star break starts today. The O-Tigers then return home to play Williamsport for a three-game set beginning at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Damaschke Field.
Brooklyn opened the scoring Sunday in the first inning. With one out, Jake Eigsti singled to left and moved to second when Sam Honeck grounded out to first. Nicholas Santomauro then doubled to center, scoring Eigsti for a 1-0 lead.
The Cyclones (36-21) made it 2-0 in the third. Eigsti doubled to left and scored when Honeck doubled to right. Oneonta starting pitcher Jose Diaz (0-1) got out of further trouble by striking out Santomauro, Scott Grimes and Dock Doyle. All three struck out swinging.
Diaz threw five innings, striking out five and giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks. Michael Torrealba pitched a scoreless sixth and Nathan Newman threw the final two innings. Neither allowed a hit.
Rockett started Oneonta's rally in the sixth, lining a single to right with one out. He moved to second when Bishop grounded out to second, then scored on Murrian's double to center. Murrian's double marked his 13th this season.
Oneonta failed to put a runner on base the rest of the game.
Brooklyn right-hander Wesley Wrenn (2-0) went seven strong innings to earn the pitching win. He gave up four hits and struck out six.
SATURDAY'S GAME
Tigers 2, Cyclones 1
Keith Hernandez homered with two out in the top of the 10th inning Saturday as Oneonta earned a victory at Brooklyn.
Hernandez, who hit his second home run this season, finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Wade Kapteyn earned his second save, striking out one in the 10th. Although Luis Rivera reached base after getting hit by Kapteyn with one out, he failed to advance past first.
Kenny Faulk, who entered with eight saves, allowed a one-out, ninth-inning home run to pinch-hitter Scott Grimes. His shot tied it at 1.
Faulk then walked Alex Gregory and gave up a double to Dock Doyle, putting runners on second and third for the Cyclones. Faulk intentionally walked Robbie Shields to load the bases before striking out Justin Garber swinging and getting Jake Eigsti to ground into a fielder's choice. Jaime fielded Eigsti's grounder to shortstop and threw to second to force out Shields.
Although he blew his third save of the season, Faulk earned the pitching victory to improve to 2-1.
Brooklyn reliever Matias Carrillo Jr. started the 10th inning and got Wade Gaynor to fly out to right. After striking out Alexis Espinoza swinging, Carrillo allowed a homer to Hernandez that gave the O-Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Jose Siso pitched five innings for Oneonta, allowing two hits. He struck out three and walked three. Michael Morrison followed with two hitless innings, striking out two and walking two. Jose Ortega pitched a perfect eighth for Oneonta, which snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth.
Gaynor walked and moved to second when Espinoza grounded out to shortstop. Hernandez then hit his seventh double this season to score Gaynor for a 1-0 edge.
Hernandez moved to third on a wild pitch but was stranded. Mark Cohoon got Matt Mansilla to ground out to third and struck out Chris Sedon swinging.
