SI Yankees shut out O-Tigers

The Oneonta Tigers produced nary an extra-base hit and struck out 12 times against seven Staten Island pitchers in a 2-0 New York-Penn League loss Saturday night before 629 fans at Damaschke Field.

DeAngelo Mack's fifth homer of the season, a shot to right field off losing pitcher Clemente Mendoza with one out in the fifth inning, gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Luke Murton contributed an RBI double in the ninth off O-Tigers closer Kenny Faulk.

Mendoza (4-3) held the Yankees to one run on four hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Yankees starter Arodys Vizcaino lasted two batters. He struck out Jamie Johnson and got Michael Rockett to ground out to second before leaving with an injured back.

Reliever Benjamin Watkins followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He struck out three and allowed one hit before Gavin Brooks took over. Brooks (4-1) earned the pitching victory, striking out four, walking two and yielding one hit in three innings.

Yankees pitchers Griffin Bailey, Paul Patterson, Ronny Marte and Ryan Flannery each followed with an inning of relief to complete the four-hit shutout.

Rockett, Rawley Bishop, John Murrian and Eric Roof had Oneonta's hits.

Mack finished 2-for-4 for the Yankees, who struck out 10 times. Reliever Michael Torrealba, who struck out two in 1 1/3 innings, walked Zoilo Almonte to start the ninth and left after Kyle Higashioka lined out to Rockett in left.

Faulk got Neil Medchill to fly out to Rockett before Almonte scored on Murton's double to right field. Faulk struck out Mack to end SI's at-bats.
