Unatego teammates Kevin Thayer and Ryan Marszal will join Mark Viviano of Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton in the semifinal round of the Division II State Wrestling Tournament after the three area boys went 2-0 on the first day of the event at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Thayer followed a 13-2 major decision over Smithtown Christian senior Matt Migliore with a 7-2 quarterfinal decision over Petrides senior Tyson Simon at 152 pounds. Unatego senior Thayer will face Addison junior Trey Duvall in the semifinals, which start at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Duvall downed Section Four champion Kyle Halladay of Chenango Valley, 6-5, in the quarterfinals. Halladay beat Thayer, 9-7, for the Section Four D-II title Feb. 9 at the Broome County Arena in Binghamton. After losing to Halladay, Thayer earned an at-large berth for the state tournament.
The other 152-pound semi pits Phoenix junior Rowdy Prior against Eden junior Alex Smythe. Semifinal winners will meet in the championship round, which is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Unatego sophomore Marszal advanced to the semifinals at 182 with back-to-back victories that required multiple overtime periods. Section Four champion Marszal started with a 6-5 decision in triple-overtime against Edgemont junior Chris Kim, then followed with a 3-2 double-overtime defeat of Hoosick Falls senior Brad Burns.
Marszal advanced to a semifinal against Warsaw senior Tim Schaefer. Canastota senior Zack Zupan will face Beekmantown senior Gage Bourdeau in the other semifinal. Bourdeau advanced with a 10-2 major decision over Walton senior Mike Beers in the quarterfinals. Beers earned an at-large berth after falling, 7-2, to Marszal in the Section Four championship match.
Viviano will take part in an all-senior semifinal round at 195. He’ll face Bryce Mazurowski of Avon on Saturday, when Tyler Smith of Midlakes meets Gouverneur’s Hunter Ayen.
Section Four champion Viviano opened with a pin of Duanesburg senior Jeff Senecal in 4 minutes, 59 seconds. He followed with an 8-3 decision over Midlakes senior Lane Frost.
In addition to Beers, who received a first-round bye for wrestlebacks, five other area wrestlers fell out of contention for state titles with Friday losses.
B-G/A freshman Chris Cirigliano was pinned by Midlakes senior Jason Charlette with 12 seconds left in their 106-pound opener. Cirigliano followed with an 8-3 decision over Highland sophomore Mike Feliciano in wrestlebacks and will continue his quest to place in the top six Saturday.
Cooperstown senior Mikey Boyle started his quest at 120 pounds with a 12-2 major-decision loss to Edgemont senior John Aslanian. Boyle then pinned Riverdale Kingsbridge freshman Mohammed Guernah in 3:49 during wrestlebacks.
Unatego senior Codie Nichols dropped his first-round match at 145 as Roy-Hart senior Drew Hull won, 5-1. Nichols was scheduled to meet senior Paul Schoenberg of Baruch College Campus in wrestlebacks.
Another Unatego senior, Leland Slawson, also lost his first match. Slawson fell, 5-2, to Camden senior Tom Confer at 160. He was scheduled to face Petrides senior Robert Kowalik in wrestlebacks.
Walton freshman Dylan Wood failed to advance to Saturday’s matches. Wood dropped a 3-1 decision to Warsaw senior Austin Keough in a 113-pound opener, then lost a 5-1 decision to Highland junior Austin Ingraham in wrestlebacks.
