Staff Report
The Oneonta Tigers ended their season in a similar fashion to the way they started it _ with a 2-0 victory.
Clemente Mendoza and Michael Torreabla combined on a seven-hitter and the O-Tigers won their season-finale at Hudson Valley, despite getting two hits Sunday.
Oneonta opened the season with a 2-0 victory over Tri-City.
But Oneonta closed with 14 losses over its final 16 games. Before that streak started, the Tigers (35-39) were tied atop the Stedler Division with Lowell, but they finished in second place 9 1/2 games behind the Spinners (45-30), who clinched their second straight division title with a 13-0 victory at Oneonta on Sept. 2.
The Tigers failed to score more than three runs in any of the final 16 games, including a 3-2 loss to Hudson Valley on Saturday.
On Sunday, Hudson Valley starter and losing pitcher Alexander Colome (7-4) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. With one out in the sixth, Jimmy Gulliver singled to left for Oneonta's first hit.
Gulliver went to second on Christopher Sedon's groundout to third and scored when Renegades first baseman Eli Sonoqui mishandled Jamie Johnson's grounder.
Johnson capped the scoring in the ninth with his third homer of the season _ a shot to right with one out off Jordi Amargos.
Mendoza (5-5) allowed six hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked none.
Torreabla struck out three and walked none over two innings. He allowed one hit in earning his second save.
On Saturday, the O-Tigers took a 2-1 lead on two errors by Hudson Valley in the ninth inning. Luis Palacios reached second on a one-out fielding error by third baseman Tyler Bortnick. Eric Roof then grounded to first baseman Sonoqui, who misplayed it as Palacios scored the go-ahead run.
But Oneonta made two errors in the bottom of the inning to lose it.
Mayobanex Acosta singled to lead off against Kenny Faulk. D.J. Jones then hit a sacrifice bunt toward third and reached on Palacios' throwing error, leaving runners at first and second.
Another fielding error by Palacios on a grounder by Elias Otero loaded the bases.
Diogenes Luis followed with an RBI single to center.
After Christopher Murrill popped out to third and Dustin Biell lined out to short, Bortnick singled to left to score Jones with the winning run.
Three Hudson Valley pitchers held Oneonta to five hits. Johnson and John Murrian had two hits apiece to lead Oneonta.
