WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Hartwick 74, Houghton 52

Junior guard Kate Purcell broke Hartwick’s all-time record for three-pointers as host Hartwick cruised to a non-league victory against a future Empire 8 Conference opponent on Friday.

Purcell’s second three-pointer of the night came with 5 minutes, 55 seconds left in the first half and gave the Hawks a 29-16 lead. It gave Purcell 118 threes and allowed her to pass Laura Shockro for first-place in school history. Shockro made 117 threes from 2001-05.

Hartwick (12-3) has won five straight. The Hawks are also the last unbeaten team in the E8 after St. John Fisher upset Ithaca, 63-59, on Friday.

Maria Foglia had 20 points to lead the Hawks, who received 18 points from Brittney Dumas.

Hartwick led throughout as Purcell’s record-tying three-pointer and a basket from Dumas gave the hosts a 5-0 advantage three minutes in. A three from Houghton’s Kaitlin Hammersley made it 11-7 at the 13:50 mark, but the Hawks quickly built their lead back up to double digits with six straight points.

Hartwick will host Nazareth College at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Hawks beat the Golden Flyers, 62-44, in Rochester two weeks ago.

O-State 57, Potsdam 39

Grace Schilling had 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead visiting Oneonta State to a SUNY Athletic Conference win.

Kristin Pappalardo finished with 12 points, four assist sand three steals for the Red Dragons (5-9, 2-5), who improved to 4-3 on the road.

Potsdam fell to 1-13.

The Red Dragons visit Plattsburgh at 2 p.m. Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Hartwick 76, Houghton 47

Jared Suderley scored a game-high 18 points to lead Hartwick to a non-conference victory at home.

Mike Geisser contributed 10 points for the Hawks (9-6), who received two points and four assists from Laurens graduate Aaron Laing.

Chris Confair’s 14 points paced Houghton (0-15), which received 11 from Tyler McQuaid.

Potsdam 82, O-State 62

Zach Mager scored a team-best 16 points, but Oneonta State dropped a SUNY Athletic Conference game at home.

Frankie Kelly contributed 14 points and Jack Dignan had 11 for the Red Dragons (2-11, 1-6), who were outscored, 44-28, in the second half.

Mark Lake’s 25 points paced Potsdam (6-8, 2-5), which received 11 from Curtis Pierce and 10 from Joe Estramonte.

SWIMMING

at Frostburg State

SUNY Cobleskill’s men split a pair of meets and the Fighting Tigers’ women were swept during a triangular meet Wednesday at Frostburg, Md.

Cobleskill’s men beat Bethany College, 86-34. They lost, 112-47, to the host school.

Chris Russo placed second in the 50-yard freestyle in 29.41 seconds, second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:33.07, and teamed with Tom Gymburch, Sam Scott and Connor Worden to place second in the 200 free relay.

Cobleskill’s women lost, 125-45, to Frostburg and fell, 110-45, to Bethany College.

The Fighting Tigers’ Audrey Harper finished second in the 100 free in 1:01.00 and joined Sara Duger, Tyler Little and Rachael Degnan on Cobleskill’s 200 medley relay team, which placed second.
