Midnight Madness ended a couple of hours ahead of time for the Oneonta High wrestling team Friday, but the Yellowjackets still had plenty of time to run the table during its five-team dual meet tournament.
Oneonta’s five-victory run to the team championship included a 48-40 opening-round defeat of Cooperstown, which finished the tournament 2-3.
OHS coach John Nealis said the event carries the Midnight Madness tag because the tournament usually ends around that time.
Sam Sherrill’s first-period pin of Chris Schulz at 160 pounds gave Oneonta the go-ahead points against Cooperstown. The match ended in 1 minute, 50 seconds as Sherrill earned six points to give the Yellowjackets a 30-28 lead.
Kirkland Dolan (170 pounds) and Thomas Fisher (182) followed with back-to-back pins before Kris Walruth capped Oneonta’s scoring with a forfeit at 220.
OHS also got a pin from Tim Bemis at 138 pounds.
Jacob Russell (99 pounds), Mikey Boyle (126), Jacob Miller (145), Kevin Segit (195) and J.P. Gertz (285) won by pin for the Redskins.
The Yellowjackets went on to defeat Mount Markham, 60-30; Oxford, 52-32; Binghamton, 57-9; and Onteora, 48-21; to improve to 13-9 this season.
Cooperstown followed its opening-round loss with a 45-27 setback against Onteora, then earned its first victory of the tournament by routing Binghamton, 66-12.
Russell’s pin of Shane Wormuth in 2:22 gave Cooperstown six key points in a 42-36 defeat of Mount Markham. His victory in the 106-pound match put the Redskins ahead, 42-30.
Cooperstown closed with a 54-30 loss to Oxford. Boyle highlighted the Redskins’ efforts with a 46-second pin at 126 pounds.
OHS is off until Jan. 2, when it visits Norwich for a Southern Tier Athletic Conference dual meet. The Yellowjackets will then host the Oneonta Rotary-Ross Cordell Tournament, which runs Jan. 4-5 at OHS.
