Mark Giallanzo didn’t waste too many pitches Thursday.
Oneonta High senior Giallanzo needed 63 pitches to one-hit Chenango Forks as the top-seeded Yellowjackets cruised to a 13-0 home victory in a Section Four Class B Tournament quarterfinal.
“Mark pitched a strong game for us,” said OHS coach Joe Hughes, whose team played for the first time since winning its second straight Southern Tier Athletic Conference championship Saturday. “He threw strikes all day long, mixed speeds well, and we had a very strong defense behind him.”
Giallanzo (6-0) struck out six, gave up an early double to losing pitcher Andrew Ziegenfus and walked a batter in the fifth inning. Giallanzo faced one over the minimum, though, as he followed the walk with a double play that started on a comebacker to the mound.
“They took aggressive approach at the plate,” Hughes said of ninth-seeded Chenango Forks, which was no-hit by senior Ben Moxley in a 4-0 loss to OHS on May 7. “They put the bat on the ball, but we made plays all day. If you look at the game as three phases _ pitching, hitting and defense _ we were strong in each of the three phases.”
Sean Getman drove in four runs on three hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth for OHS. He also tripled and singled.
Moxley contributed four hits for the Jackets (19-2), who received two hits apiece from Giallanzo (two RBIs), Ben Payton, David Wright and Zach Pidgeon.
OHS will host a sectional semifinal against fourth-seeded Waverly (14-5) on Tuesday. Waverly beat No. 5 Norwich, 4-1, on Thursday to advance to the semifinals.
Giallanzo also threw a one-hitter May 2, when Oneonta beat Norwich, 13-0.
Waverly reached the Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship game but was no-hit in a 1-0 loss to Lansing, which is the No. 1 seed in the Section Four Class C Tournament.

Newfield 5, Unatego 4
Kris O’Rourke’s double off the center-field fence scored Cal Addy from second in the top of the 12th inning as 12th-seeded Newfield won a Section Four Class C quarterfinal at No. 4 Unatego.
O’Rourke hit a 1-1 pitch off of losing pitcher Kellen Komenda.
Midstate Athletic Conference champion Unatego (16-5) threatened in the bottom of the 12th.
Phil Youngs was hit by a pitch from Niko Nunez to start the inning and took second on an errant pickoff throw. Komenda then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Nunez faked a throw to first, then threw behind Youngs at third.
“We had no shot at first,” Newfield coach Jeff Augustine said. “Nunez turned and threw and Youngs came off a little too far. If we had thrown to first, (Youngs) would have scored. He got a great jump.”
Youngs got in a rundown between third and home before being tagged out, allowing Komenda to reach second. After a strikeout, back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Spartans. Nunez then induced a grounder to short, and Newfield got the forceout at second to end it.
Unatego had a 4-3 lead in the seventh and Newfield was down to its last strike, but Nunez walked and stole second off of reliever Dan Shelton. Adam Frielander followed with a walk and Addy hit an opposite-field single to left to score Nunez.
The Spartans scored twice in the sixth, when Komenda had an RBI groundout and Travis Woods scored Youngs on a squeeze-bunt to make it 4-3.
Youngs and Shelton had two hits apiece for Unatego.
“I can’t say enough about that ballclub,” Augustine said of Unatego. “They never stopped.”
Newfield (11-9) will travel to top-seeded Lansing (20-0) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for a sectional semifinal.

Lansing 12, Sidney 2
Senior outfielder Dylan VanPelt had an RBI single in the first inning and scored in the fourth for ninth-seeded Sidney, which dropped a Section Four Class C quarterfinal on the road.
Billy Kozak sent the first pitch into left-center field for a leadoff double off Lansing starter Benji Parkes. Damian Zimmer then grounded to Bobcats second baseman Ellington Hopkins, who threw out Kozak at third base.
“That’s something you don’t normally see,” Sidney coach Patrick Vibbard said. “I think it even surprised the umpires.”
Zimmer later scored on VanPelt’s single, giving the Warriors (11-11) the early lead.
Top-seeded Lansing (21-0) responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by Sean Streb’s RBI double.
“They were overly aggressive on the bases,” Vibbard said. “They rattled us a little bit in the first inning.”
Three more runs in the third put Lansing ahead, 6-1, before Sidney loaded the bases with none out in the fourth. Patrick Vibbard then grounded to shortstop, driving in VanPelt as Lansing turned a double play.
“Hopkins made an unbelievable turn,” Kyle Vibbard said. “He saved them at least two runs by making good plays in the field. Parkes threw decent, but they’re solid defensively.”
Lansing’s 1-through-4 hitters had two hits apiece as the Bobcats outhit the Warriors, 10-6. The Bobcats scored all of their runs in six innings against losing pitcher Mike Gravel, who struck out three. Zak Green struck out the side in the seventh for Sidney, which will lose Gravel, VanPelt and outfielder DaShon Boyles to graduation.
“We’ve got a lot of our starters coming back,” Vibbard said. “I think we’re going to be pretty good the next couple of years.”
Interscholastic Athletic Conference champion Lansing advanced to a home semifinal against league rival Newfield on Tuesday.

Bishop Grimes 6, Cooperstown 1
Winning pitcher Josh Allan struck out nine in a three-hitter to lead seventh-seeded Bishop Grimes to a Section Three Class C-2 quarterfinal win at No. 2 Cooperstown.
The Redskins (11-9) had the bases loaded with none out in the first inning but scored once.
“We just didn’t hit the ball hard,” Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek said. “It’s been a season of frustration for Ethan (Bliss), who pitched well all year but didn’t get any support.”
Bliss left after five innings, trailing, 3-1.
Chris Schad’s RBI double in the third inning gave Bishop Grimes a 2-1 lead.

SK 15, Jefferson 2
Senior Brandon Tuttle went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and seven RBIs in fifth-seeded South Kortright’s Section Four Class D quarterfinal win at No. 4 Jefferson.
“We’ve been pitching and playing good defense all year,” SK coach Bob VanValkenburgh said. “Our bats finally came alive today.”
Tuttle hit a two-run single in the Rams’ four-run first inning. He also had a two-run triple in the second and a two-run double in the fourth, when SK scored four times to take a 10-1 lead.
“He hit everything hard,” VanValkenburgh said of Tuttle.
Trevor Holdridge contributed three hits and Cody Burns had two for the Rams, who received six strikeouts over five innings from winning pitcher Cody Stinson (6-1).
Austin Clayton had two hits for the J-Hawks (8-3).
SK (11-3) will travel to top-seeded Hancock for a sectional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“They’re the No. 1 seed and they have a quality program,” VanValkenburgh said of Hancock, which has won the last two Section Four Class D titles.

Milford 4, Deposit 1
Second-seeded Milford (12-3) rebounded from losing three of its last four regular-season games with a sectional-quarterfinal victory at home.
“We got back to playing better fundamental defense,” Milford coach Andrew Griffiths said. “We had a couple kids step up and make above-average plays.”
Paul VanWarner struck out three, walked one and scattered six hits against seventh-seeded Deposit (9-10), which scored in the sixth to pull to 3-1.
“For the most part, he kept the ball low and let the defense make the plays for him,” Griffiths said. “That’s his standard MO.”
Milford got three runs in the second inning. C.J. Smith and Dan Hoppe walked to set up RBI singles for Wyatt Waters and Jacob Tabor. Waters also scored, on a sacrifice fly by VanWarner.
After Derek Russell scored on a fielder’s choice for the Lumberjacks in the sixth, Milford regained a three-run cushion in the bottom of the inning as Tabor singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
“It was an above-average Class D baseball game _ cleanly played, very good defenses, very evenly pitched, pretty fun and enjoyable,” Griffiths said. “It was the classic ‘Sad somebody had to lose’ game, but I am glad it was us who got to win.”
Milford will host sixth-seeded Richfield Springs in a sectional semifinal Tuesday. The teams split during the regular season as RS won at home, 14-3, on May 11 but lost, 6-1, at Milford on April 4.
“We’ve seen Richfield good and bad,” Griffiths said. “There will be no surprises as we know each other well. It should be a very hotly contested, difficult game. I’m happy to still be playing. I couldn’t ask for anything else with this team.”

RS 6, Edmeston 2
Making his first pitching start of the year, sophomore Tom Worobey struck out seven and walked five in a three-hitter as sixth-seeded Richfield Springs won a Section Four Class D quarterfinal on the road.
“He just kept them off-balance,” Indians coach Randy Stone said. “He kept the ball low and had a good breaking pitch. He threw big for us.”
Stone said he gave Worobey, who had pitched in relief this season, the start because his top two pitchers both had long outings in Tuesday’s 11-7 first-round defeat of Hunter-Tannersville.
“Zach Boss had a sore arm and (Keegan) Wheelock-Tanner threw about 80 pitches on Tuesday,” Stone said,” so I went with Worobey instead.”
Richfield Springs lost its starting catcher to injury when Braydon Hudson hurt his left hand making a double play in the first inning.
“He tagged a runner out at the plate and threw to third for a double play,” Stone said. “He hit the next inning, and I think that’s when we realized it may be broken. We’ll have to see how it is.”
Hudson got an RBI single in the top of the second and scored on Wheelock-Tanner’s single.
Edmeston scored single runs in the second and third to tie it. In the second, Worobey walked the bases loaded and allowed Nathan Truax to come home on a wild pitch. Tom Parker scored on a single by Truax in the third.
The Indians pulled away with a four-run sixth. Kyle Richvalski and Wheelock-Tanner had RBI singles before Nick Nicoletti capped the inning with a two-run double.
Parker struck out nine for Edmeston, which finished its season at 12-4.
Richfield Springs (13-3) visits No. 2 seed Milford for a semifinal Tuesday.
