Unatego girls win MAC title

Sarah Mannina, Juli Carbone and Torri Halaquist scored two goals apiece as a junior-laden squad from Unatego clinched the Midstate Athletic Conference girls soccer title with a 7-0 victory over visiting Delhi on Friday.

The Spartans (13-1, 12-1) earned their second league title in three years.

"They really have come together well and it shows," said Unatego coach Sue Herodes, whose squad has one senior in Dani Wessells. "They're willing to work together on the field and not just for themselves, but they want to get everyone involved. These kids are very close-knit. They really are focused as far as supporting one another."

Mannina, a junior in her fourth varsity season, scored 3 minutes, 10 seconds into play off an assist from Carbone.

Midway through the first half, Katrina Clark, Mannina and Carbone combined to make it 2-0. Clark found Mannina inside the box. Mannina slotted a pass to Carbone, who one-timed it into the goal.

"It was like bing-bing-bing," Herodes said.

Wessells also scored for the Spartans, who scored on seven of their 13 shots.

"We had pretty controlled passes," Herodes said. "Most of the goals came from around the 6-yard box. We didn't really take many shots from the outside."

The Spartans travel to Bainbridge-Guilford for their last league game Monday. Then it's off to the Section Four Class C Tournament the following week.

"I anticipate being a problem for people," Herodes said of sectionals. "We're going to come against strong teams, but our work ethic will keep us in games."

Oneonta 3, Owego 1

Karsen Shultz scored twice, the first coming two minutes into play, and Brianna Georgia had a pair of assists to lead host Oneonta High to a non-league victory in a game between Southern Tier Athletic Conference division winners.

Georgia has two goals and four assists in Oneonta's last four games.

"She's giving us some good offense," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said of Georgia, who assisted Shultz's first goal and Cami Cleaveland's goal, which gave the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead nine minutes into the second half. "She's joining the attack more consistently. She's been serving good balls and crossing them into the box. She's been a nice ... I don't want to say surprise because she's always been solid defensively ... but she's been a nice addition to the offense. That's going to benefit us heading into sectionals."

Shultz's first goal came off a double-assist from Dani Nicosia and Georgia. Nicosia played a throughball to Georgia, who found Shultz about 15 yards out on the left side of the box. Shultz turned and drove a shot to the far post.

"It was a great goal and it put Owego on its heels early," said Mackey, whose team held a 19-4 advantage in shots.

Cleaveland's goal came off a cross from Georgia. Cleaveland controlled it, turned and scored on a hard shot.

"It was a no-brainer, no-doubt-it goal," Mackey said. "When she strikes it like that, she's tough to stop."

Shultz's second goal made it 3-0 with 14 minutes left.

The Yellowjackets (12-1, 11-0) host Seton Catholic Central at 7 p.m. Monday for Senior Night. The STAC semifinals are Thursday. Mackey said he believes East Division champ Oneonta will host West Division winner Corning in one semifinal, and Central winner Owego will play Metro champion Vestal in the other.

The STAC championship is next Saturday at the site the largest remaining school.

Downsville 2, Davenport 1

In what might be a preview of the Delaware League crossover, Amanda Erwin scored with a 19 1/2 minutes left to give the Eagles a road victory.

Downsville (10-5, 8-1) has won the Mountain Division title for the first time since 2007, when it beat Davenport, 3-0, for the overall league title.

Davenport (10-2-1, 7-1) and Stamford are vying for the Upper Division title. Both teams have one conference loss. Davenport won the head-to-head meeting this season against Stamford, but Wildcats coach Ray Preston said he wasn't sure if that counts as a tiebreaker.

Erwin's goal came on a deflection off a failed Davenport clear. The ball bounced off Erwin's shins and ricocheted into the goal from 18 yards.

Davenport held a 20-5 advantage in shots.

"We did not finish," said Preston, who won his 400th game Wednesday with a 2-0 overtime victory at Roxbury. "You can take all the shots you want, but we just didn't finish."

Downsville's Katie Lawrence had 13 saves.

Davenport, which has tied Gilboa in the last two DL crossover finals and beat Jefferson, 3-1, in the 2008 title game, hosts Windham at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Early in the second half, Tersigni found McCall on the back post. McCall scored from 12 yards.

The Panthers (6-7, 5-7) travel to the Tri-Valley League West Division winner Morris on Saturday before heading to twice-beaten Davenport on Monday.
