Deposit rides heavy hitters to comeback victory

Lumberjacks win second straight sectional title with seventh-inning rally

NIMMONSBURG _ Deposit had three outs left Saturday at the BAGSAI Complex.

The Lumberjacks only needed two, though, rallying from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 5-4 victory over Hancock that clinched their second straight Section Four Class D softball championship.

"Our mantra all season has been 7/21 _ seven innings, 21 outs _ play the entire game," Deposit coach Ed Swartwout said. "We knew Hancock had a good squad, but we knew we never give up."

Hancock pitcher Lindsay McGraw got No. 9 Deposit batter Victoria Schaub on a comebacker to open the last of the seventh, leaving the bases empty for the hottest hitter of the game.

Deposit leadoff batter McKenzie Martin then started to fill in the blanks for the third-seeded Lumberjacks (20-4) as the senior third baseman put herself into scoring position with a double to center field. The shot marked her fourth extra-base hit of the sectional final as Martin finished 4-for-4 with three doubles and a triple.

Haley Linkroum followed with a bunt-single that momentarily put runners at the corners as she soon took second on defensive indifference.

Hancock's first error came next as No. 3 Deposit batter Shelby Pettersen hit a sharp grounder that second baseman Brooke Sherburne misplayed. Both runners came home on the miscue, which tied the score at 4.

Swartwout then swapped Pettersen for pinch-runner Kate Tiffany, who took off from first base when Deposit clean-up batter Hannah Freyer drove a ball over center fielder Demi Travis.

A bizarre scene unfolded next as Tiffany and Freyer both headed to third from opposite directions while Hancock shortstop Lea Newman caught the relay throw.

"I was concentrating so hard on getting home I just missed the bag," said Tiffany, who ran back to third base as Freyer attempted to stretch her double into a triple.

Although the baserunning blunder gave fifth-seeded Hancock (16-6) a chance to get one out _ or maybe even both _ Newman's low throw to third went under the glove of third baseman Kayla Barringer.

The Wildcats' second error allowed Tiffany to score the winning run for the Lumberjacks, who won a sectional final by one run for the second year in a row. Last season, Deposit ended Afton's Section Four-record streak of 16 titles in a row with a 6-5 victory.

Martin's leadoff double in the bottom of the first inning led to Deposit's first run as she scored on back-to-back groundouts by Linkroum and Pettersen.

Hancock tied it in the second, when Barringer led off with a double, beat a throw to third on Kravetsky's sacrifice bunt and scored on a groundout to second by Travis.

Martin then led off the third with a double off the wall in left-center field and made it 2-1 when Linkroum and Pettersen hit consecutive singles.

Travis started Hancock's final rally from the No. 7 spot, hitting the first of three straight singles to set up the top of the order in the top of the seventh.

Travis scored on a wild pitch to tie it, and No. 2 batter Caitlin Wormuth followed with a one-out, two-run double to put Hancock ahead.

Winning pitcher Justina Ellis (20-4) struck out nine, walked one and scattered eight hits for Deposit, which advanced to a state quarterfinal against Livingston Manor at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday back at the BAGSAI Complex.

McGraw struck out two and walked two in a nine-hitter for Hancock, which lost four straight sectional finals against Afton from 2004-07.

Tuesday's winner will advance to a 9 a.m. state semifinal at the ADK Complex in Queensbury on Saturday. The state final will follow at 2 p.m. Saturday.
