Hancock wins two at Damaschke for D baseball title

ONEONTA _ Hancock's Tyler Phillips struck out 14 to lead top-seeded Hancock to a 7-0 victory over Richfield Springs in the Section Four Class D baseball championship game Thursday at Damaschke Field.

"I felt a bit slow to begin with, but I felt more awake and alive as I went on," said Phillips, who may have had a chance to match his varsity-high of 15 strikeouts had he completed the game.

Ryan Smith struck out three and walked one in the seventh to cap the victory as Hancock got the last 13 Richfield Springs outs on strikeouts.

The Wildcats (20-3) advanced to a Class D state quarterfinal against Section Three's Oriskany or Brookfield on Tuesday at Broome Community College. Oriskany and Brookfield, which beat Hancock in the state quarterfinals last season, 3-2, will play for the Section Three title today.

Phillips, who hit four batters and walked two, gave up four hits to sixth-seeded Richfield Springs (14-4).

"We take a lot of pride in pitching and defense," said Hancock coach Brandon Olbrys, whose program won its third straight sectional title via shutout. "That says a lot."

Hancock took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Phillips led off with a triple to left-center field and scored on Eli Holton's infield single, which dribbled past Indians starting pitcher Zach Boss.

The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead into the fifth, when they pulled away with three runs. Richfield Springs reliever Keegan Wheelock-Tanner walked the bases loaded with one out before Hancock scored twice on errors and again on an RBI single by Phillips.

Wheelock-Tanner took over in the second inning for Boss, who threw a complete-game one-hitter in a 5-3 sectional semifinal victory over Milford earlier Thursday at Damaschke Field.

"I'd start him again," Indians coach Randy Stone said of Boss, who gave up two runs on two hits to Hancock after striking out a varsity-high 16 against second-seeded Milford. "He wanted the ball."

Joe Kelly had two doubles for the Indians in their semifinal victory, which also featured doubles from Nick Nicoletta, Joael Gardner and Chris Young.

Gardener had two hits in the championship game for RS, which stranded 11 runners.

Hancock beat Cherry-Valley Springfield, 3-0, in the 2011 sectional final and topped Edmeston, 7-0, in 2010.
