Football boosters to meet tonight

The Oneonta Football Booster Club will meet at 7 p.m. today at the Elks Club in Oneonta.

Anyone with children involved in the football and cheerleading programs are encouraged to attend. For more information, call Paul Smith at 607-434- 9084.

OHS girls basketball tickets on sale

Oneonta High is selling 300 tickets before Saturday’s Class B girls basketball state quarterfinal at Hartwick College.

The Yellowjackets (18-3), who won their third straight Section Four championship Friday with a 30- 27 overtime defeat of Lansing, will host Section Three champion South Jefferson (21-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lambros Arena.

OHS athletic director Joe Hughes said Wednesday that each high school has been allotted 300 pre-game tickets to sell. Hughes also said an additional 500 tickets will be available at the door Saturday.

Tickets cost $7 each, regardless of age, and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. To buy tickets, call Hughes at 607-433-8251 or 607-434-6352.

O-State to host wrestling festival

Oneonta State will host its Red Dragon Wrestling Festival at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chase Gymnasium. Wrestlers will compete in seven age-groups according to weight (youth 6-and-under; pee-wee 7-8; midget 9-10; inter 11-12; junior 13-14; high school 15-19 excluding graduates; and open 19-and-over).

Varsity wrestlers cannot compete in the youth through junior divisions. Wrestlers may enter two weight classes or two divisions.

Bouts will be three, one-minute periods followed by tiebreakers, if necessary.

Wrestlers may weigh in from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday or from 7-8 a.m. Saturday.

Adult football tryouts this weekend

The Leatherstocking Indians adult football team will hold open tryouts from 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 143 RJM Lane in Oneonta. The site is off of Pony Farm Road, behind Mariott Painting.

Players of all skill levels are welcome to try out for free. Each will be tested in agility, the 40-yard dash and the bench press.

The Indians will provide game and practice jerseys, as well as equipment this season. Players may purchase these items at the end of the season but are not required to do so.

Registration will cost $300 per player and will be due in April. Registration money will help fund the operating costs associated with the team. For directions or for more information, call general manager Meghan Hartnett at 607-643-6097 or Josh Whitehead (player recruitment) at 607-643-6050.

Hartnett said Wednesday that her team is close to securing a field for the 2010 season. She added the Town of Hartwick will vote on whether it will allow the Indians to use Callan Field this summer during its next board meeting, which is scheduled for Monday.

G-MU 3-on-3 tournament Saturday

The Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Booster Club 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will begin with registration at 9 a.m. Saturday at the high school. Play begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Teams will compete in modified, junior varsity and varsity divisions and will be categorized by gender and highest level played. Co-ed teams are not allowed. Cost is $40 per team. Each team can have a maximum of four players.

Each player, regardless of age, must have a parentor guardian-signed waiver. Forms are available at the school’s website, www.gmucsd.org.

The event also features a three-point shootout and foul-shooting contest. For more information, call Don Davis at 607-783-2018.

Youth baseball draft Saturday

Cooperstown Youth Baseball will hold its Little League draft and late registration Saturday at Cooperstown Central’s Bursey Gymnasium.

Drafts will run at the following times: 8-9 a.m. majors; 9:15-9:45 a.m. minors (second-graders); 9:45-10:45 a.m. minors (third- and fourth-graders); and 11 a.m.- noon softball.

Players should bring gym shoes and gloves. For more information, call 607-547-9259.

Milford to host basketball benefit

Milford Central will host its March Madness co-ed basketball games at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Varsity, junior varsity and modified teams will participate. Admission is $1 for children, $2 for adults and $5 for families of five or more. Refreshments will be served. Proceeds will benefit the Milford Education Foundation.

Hunter course starts March 23

West End Archery in Oneonta will host a New York state hunter education course from 5:30-9 p.m. March 23-25. The class is limited to 20 students. To register, call 607-432-4947 during evening hours.

Volleyball league begins March 25

The Hartwick College volleyball program will host a co-ed volleyball league Thursday nights at Lambros Arena, from March 25-May 13.

Hall to celebrate women’s history

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will celebrate Women’s History Month on March 27 by welcoming four women from the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League as part of a full day of programming.

Visitors may participate in a special interview with former AAGPBL players Gloria Elliott, Sarah Jane Ferguson, Joanne McComb and Dolly Brumfield White, among other programs.

Tickets for the interview are free but must be reserved in advance. Members may reserve their tickets today by calling 607-547-0397. Remaining tickets, if any, will be available to the general public beginning March 22.

Other events will take place throughout the day and are included with a paid admission to the Hall.

Local man to run for charity

Maryland resident Steve Sutton is attempting to raise $3,500 for the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston by running in the Boston Marathon on April 19.

Sutton will be part of a 14-person team that will represent the Perkins School for the Blind, which educated his son William from 1999 through his graduation in 2008. William attended Milford Central from kindergarten through third grade, then became a residential student at Perkins.
