Delhi resident Austin Bedient left no doubt about it Sunday at Damaschke Field.
A little more than three weeks after his record-breaking local performance, Austin finished with the highest points total in the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run sectional competition Sunday at Damaschke Field.
Austin ran away with the boys 13-14 age-group title, amassing 1,206 points in the three-event sectional to beat runner-up Ryan Walker of Painted Post by 281 points. Austin’s 1,206 points is a record for a sectional competition at Damaschke Field, which hosted the event for the first time last year.
In the 2011 sectional at Damaschke Field, Austin placed third in the 13-14 age-group with 994 points. Marathon’s Ryan Tillotson won the 13-14 title with 1,031 points, three more than second-place Nicholas Bird of Summit.
Austin also reached the sectional level in 2010, but his 1,148 points at East Greenbush fell seven shy of Connar McCart’s winning total.
On April 27, Austin broke the record for a local qualifying event in Oneonta with 1,170 points. Oneonta High senior standout Michael Calkins, who struck out 17 in a no-hitter against Horseheads on Saturday, set the record of 1,070 points in 2008.
Austin plays baseball for Delhi’s junior varsity team, which recently completed its season.
Teddy McGraw of Oneonta also won a sectional title Sunday, scoring 830 points for the boys 9-10 crown. McGraw beat Delhi resident Alex Haight by 99 points. Teddy is a fourth-grader and Alex is a third-grader at Center Street Elementary in Oneonta.
Austin and Teddy have chances to advance to the Mets Team Championships at Citi Field later this year. Their scores will be compared to those of other sectional champions in the state, and the top five in each age-group will qualify for the Mets Team Championships.
Austin and Teddy are the first locals to win a sectional Pitch, Hit & Run competition since 2010, when Tyler Bruce of Oneonta scored 609 points to earn the 7-8 title at East Greenbush.
Three other Center Street students earned silver medals Sunday. Third-grader Quinn Hansen placed second in the boys 7-8 group with 496 points _ 12 behind winner Landen Burch of Corning. Sixth-graders John Michael Mikolaicyk (876 points) and Robin Wolf-Gould (688) also finished second, in the boys and girls 11-12 age-groups, respectively. Central Bridge’s River Sisson won the boys 11-12 title with 922 points, and Anna Rinaldo of Earlville won the girls 11-12 championship with 846 points.
Other local medal-winners were Grace Rhinehart of Walton in the 9-10 girls (491 points, silver); Maria Burch of Oneonta in the 13-14 girls (883, silver); and Bryce Bracchy of Delhi in the 7-8 boys (461, bronze).
Cobleskill’s Paige Roberts had the only girls’ 1,000-point performance, scoring 1,027 to top Maria in the 13-14 age-group. Aubrey Roberts of Cobleskill (7-8, 424 points) and Jaci Wright of Smyrna (9-10, 543) also won girls sectional titles.
