Morgan Clark must really like to play Schenevus.
Senior guard Clark capped her 19-point performance Wednesday night with a 6-for-6 effort from the free throw line in the fourth quarter as Worcester beat Tri-Valley League foe Schenevus, 49-41, in a battle of state-ranked girls basketball teams.
"We played some good team defense tonight," said Worcester coach Corey Pier, whose team holds a two-game lead on Schenevus for the Tri-Valley League East Division title with two games to go. "We got some easy baskets from our defense _ a half-court trap _ and we picked up some big rebounds in that fourth quarter. It wasn't one person; we all did it."
Clark, who finished 9-for-10 from the foul line, scored a season-high 27 points when the Wolverines beat Schenevus, 62-53, in the first round of the Ray Preston Tournament at Davenport on Dec. 27.
Worcester (11-2, 10-1) entered the game as the state's No. 22 team in Class D, one spot behind the Dragons (11-3, 8-3).
Karli Pochkar scored four of her 12 points in the fourth quarter, when Jillian Perillo had five of her seven points to help Worcester close with a 17-11 run. Megan Tefft's 16 points marked the only double-digit scoring effort for Schenevus, which also has two T-V games left.
Worcester will clinch the division with a Schenevus loss or by winning one of its last two games _ at Cherry Valley-Springfield on Tuesday or against visiting Milford on Feb. 10.
The T-V East champion will play T-V West winner Franklin in the crossover championship game Feb. 18 at Oneonta State.
