G-MU grad hits independent baseball

Gilbertsville-Mount Upton graduate John Aber is listed as the manager and a right-handed pitcher for the Carlsbad Bats of the Pecos League of Professional Baseball Clubs, a newly formed independent league with teams from Texas and New Mexico.

Aber, 24, played baseball for the Raiders and Marywood University (Pa.) before coaching in the New York State League.

The website carlsbadbats.com lists his appointment as manager as an April 11 transaction.

The Bats will open their 2011 season at the Alpine Cowboys in Alpine, Texas, on May 11.

Locals complete half-marathon

Four area runners competed in the inaugural Lake George Half Marathon on April 23.

Oneonta resident Matt Pearsall finished fifth in his age-group, in 1 hour, 52 minutes, 52 seconds. Michele Pearsall also placed fifth in her age-group, crossing in 2:08:41.

Holly Conway, also of Oneonta, was seventh in her age-group (1:55:50). Milford resident Nancy B. Mitchell won her age-group with a time of 2:13:05.

The 13.1-mile event attracted 300 runners who competed in steady rain and temperatures in the 30s.

Pitch, Hit & Run rescheduled

The MLB Pitch, Hit & Run local qualifier in Oneonta and the Oneonta Recreation Department's Sandlot Day were postponed Friday because of rain.

Both events have been rescheduled for 5-8 p.m. this Friday at Ted Christman Field in Neahwa Park.

Golf tournaments set for Saturday

The Morris golf team will host a captain-and-crew golf tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday at Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens.

Entry fee is $25 per four-player team and includes prizes, closest to the pins and skins. Proceeds will benefit Morris' golf team.

 The Tri Valley Colts Golf Tournament, which was rained out last Saturday, will begin at 1 p.m. this Saturday at Colonial Ridge Golf. Openings remain for this fundraiser. For more information or to sign-up, call 607-263-5291.

Outlaws' host families to meet

The Oneonta Outlaws will hold a host-family meeting at 6 p.m. Saturday in the banquet room at Christopher's restaurant.

The meeting is for current host families and those interested in hosting an Outlaws player during the 2011 New York Collegiate Baseball League season this summer.

Trap Shoot set for Sunday

The Gilbertsville Rod & Gun Club will hold its first Trap Shoot of the season at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Cobleskill to host Pitch, Hit & Run

SUNY Cobleskill will host a local qualifier for the MLB Pitch, Hit & Run skills competition at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Registration for this free event, which is open to boys and girls ages 7-14 (as of July 17, 2010), begins at 10 a.m. Sunday. Birth certificates are required at registration.

Players will compete in four age-groups, ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14.

UVSC to host event Sunday

The Unadilla Valley Sports Center in New Berlin will start its season with the District Three MX, featuring select quad classes, this Sunday. The event also will run June 5 and June 19.

Umpires to help Cancer Society

The local Schohanna Board of Baseball/Softball Umpires will participate in Umpire's Striking Out Cancer, which runs Monday through Friday.

The board will wear pink cancer bracelets and donate a portion of its game fees to The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Oneonta.

Hall of Famers to appear May 28

National Baseball Hall of Famers Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson, Joe Morgan and Cal Ripken will participate in the May 28 opening of a permanent exhibit at the Cooperstown museum, the shrine announced Wednesday.

One for the Books: Baseball Records and the Stories Behind Them is an interactive exhibit that will open in the Hank Aaron Gallery. It will feature more than 200 artifacts that help explore the stories behind records such as Cy Young's 511 victories, Ripken's 2,632 consecutive games played and Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak.

Special museum programming will be held throughout the day as well, including a Voices of the Game installment featuring Carew, Jackson, Morgan and Ripken. Tickets are required for the Voices event and will be first available to museum members May 2 at $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and younger).

Soccer Hall inductions June 4

The 2011 National Soccer Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is set for noon June 4 at Patriot Place in Foxborough, Mass., U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday.

Cobi Jones, Eddie Pope, Earnie Stewart, Bruce Murray and Bob Gansler will be honored during the invitation-only ceremony, which will take place before a soccer "friendly" between the U.S. Men's National Team and Spain at Gillette Stadium.

The June 4 Induction Ceremony will mark the second straight year the event has not been held in Oneonta. The Soccer Hall closed its Oneonta facility in September of 2009.

O-State to host wrestling camp

United States Olympian Ken Chertow will present the Gold Medal Training wrestling camp June 25-29 at Oneonta State. For more information, visit the website camps@kenchertow.com.

Fox Golf Classic set for June 6

The 12th annual A.O. Fox Hospital Golf Classic is set for June 6 at the Oneonta Country Club.

The captain-and-crew fundraiser has raised more than $350,000, which has been used to purchase a variety of medical equipment, over the last 11 years and draws between 180 and 200 participants each year.

Winners will receive a trophy and have their names engraved on the Dr. Lusins trophy, which is on display at the FoxCare Center.

Golfers will compete in the morning or the afternoon. Spots are still available for the morning round. A late-afternoon buffet dinner follows at the Foothills Performing Arts Center, with prizes awarded for both flights.

The event will feature awards for longest drives, straightest drives and closest-to-the-pin on par-3s, as well as a hole-in-one contest for a new car.

Sponsorships are still available as well. Raffle and silent auction donations will be accepted.

College baseball playoffs May 6-8

Oneonta will host the NCBA Division II District II Baseball Playoffs, which run May 6-8 at Damaschke Field and Field 6 in Neahwa Park.

The double-elimination tournament will feature the top two teams from District II North and the top two from District II South.

The event opens with two games at 4 p.m. May 6. Second-round games are set for 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. May 7 on Field 6. The championship game is set for 10 a.m. May 8 at Damaschke Field.

The tournament champion will advance to the NCBA Division II World Series, which runs May 20-24 at Point Stadium in Johnstown, Pa.
