Ex-Hawk scores twice for unbeaten Australia

LONDON _ Former Hartwick College standout Bronwen Knox scored twice Friday in helping Australia's water polo team to an 11-8 victory over Russia in a preliminary round game of the 2012 Summer Olympics at London.

Knox has scored a total of four goals as Australia completed preliminary round play with a 3-0 record in gaining the top seed among Group B teams.

The Aussies, whose roster also includes former Hartwick player Sophie Smith, will play China (0-3) in a quarterfinal at 3:20 p.m. Sunday.

The Chinese lost to the United States, 7-6, on Friday.

A third player who suited up for Hartwick, Lisa Gibson, misfired on her lone shot during England's 10-5 loss to Italy on Wednesday. Gibson had one steal for the host country, which finished preliminary round play 0-3.

England will play Spain, the top seed from Group A, in a quarterfinal at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Knox, part of Australia's bronze medal winners in 2008 when she scored 12 goals, had a pair of first-half goals Friday. She scored off an assist from Mel Rippon with 5 minutes, 32 seconds left in the first quarter to give Australia a 3-1 lead. Her second goal, off an assist from Glencora Ralph, gave the Aussies a 7-5 lead 3:32 before halftime.

A Hartwick standout in 2005 and 2006, Knox also had two steals.

Smith, who spent the 2005 season at Hartwick, failed to convert on the one shot she took Friday.

Gibson played for Hartwick in 2008. She took two shots Friday but did not score.

Maggie Steffens scored three goals to lead the U.S. water polo team.

The U.S. (2-0-1) finished the preliminary round even with Spain at the top Group A with five points. But Spain earned the top spot because of the tiebreaker, making the Americans the group's second-seeded team for the knockout stage.

The U.S. will play 2012 European champion Italy in Sunday's quarterfinals.
