Oneonta inches closer to playoffs

Zac Johnson and Cody Hough homered, winning pitcher Matt Schmitt allowed one run over the final five innings and the Oneonta Outlaws defeated the host Cooperstown Hawkeyes, 11-3, in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League on Monday.

Johnson finished 3-for-4 and scored four times for the Outlaws (24-21), who maintained their hold on the final PGCBL playoff spot with their fifth victory over their last six games.

Oneonta moved into fourth place with a 6-2 win over visiting Cooperstown on Sunday, passing Mohawk Valley, which lost Sunday to first-place Amsterdam, 5-3. Mohawk Valley (22-21) played at Elmira on Monday, but the score was not reported by press time. Depending on the outcome of that game, Oneonta will have a half-game or a 1 1/2-game lead, heading into their home game against second-place Newark (25-19) at 7 tonight. If it's the latter, Oneonta can clinch a playoff with a victory tonight. The Outlaws conclude their regular season Wednesday at third-place Glens Falls (26-20).

Mohawk Valley travels to Amsterdam tonight and finishes its regular season Wednesday at Watertown.

The PGCBL playoffs begin Friday.

On Monday, the Outlaws scored twice in the first inning off of losing pitcher Chris Haggarty. Logan Brown led off with a double, went to third on a groundout by Zach Lucas and scored on Shane Crain's sacrifice fly to left. Johnson and Zander Wiel then hit back-to-back doubles to make it 2-0.

Last-place Cooperstown (11-31) answered with a run in the bottom of the first first off of Oneonta starter Brett Lisle. Brad Vanderglas walked with one out, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Tyler Mautner's single to center.

RBI groundouts by Sutton Whiting and Lucas Leifield in the fourth inning extended Oneonta's lead to 4-1.

Cooperstown's Colton Beatty answered with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2.

But Johnson hit a two-run homer to left in the seventh and Hough hit a grand slam to center in the ninth for the Outlaws, who received three hits from Brown, and two apiece from Wiel and Holder.

Schmitt struck out one and walked over the final five innings. Cooperstown's final run came in the eighth on an RBI single by Beatty. Pippin and Bobby Guerra had two hits each for the Hawkeyes, who travel to Albany tonight.
