Ryne Rivino singled twice and Dan Hodne hit a two-run triple Sunday as Oneonta Post 259 warmed up for the American Legion New York State Baseball Tournament with a 7-3 non-league victory over Utica Adrean at Utica Notre Dame.
The Green Wave (25-10) scored six times with two outs in the fourth inning, which ended with Oneonta ahead, 7-0. Ben Moxley started the fourth-inning scoring spree with an RBI single, and Hodne later tripled in two runs to make it 6-0. Winning pitcher David Wright (6-1) scored on a passed ball, Moxley came home on the back-end of a first-and-third double steal with Sean Getman, and Hodne scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.
Wright, Rivino, Mike Calkins, Mark Giallanzo, Getman and Moxley combined on a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts against Adrean, which will host the five-day, double-elimination state tournament at Utica's Murnane Field starting Wednesday.
Adrean, which scored three unearned runs off Giallanzo in the fifth, will play District Three champion Saugerties Post 72 in the last of four state-tournament openers Wednesday.
The state tournament starts at 9 a.m. Wednesday with District Nine's Alfred Jurek Post 1672 against Middletown Post 151 of District Eight. The Saratoga Stampede of District Four and District Seven's Ferris Goodridge Post 330 follow at noon. District Six winner Oneonta then meets defending state champion Whitestown of District Five at 5 p.m., with Saugerties and Adrean to follow at 8 p.m.
Oneonta coach Mike Jester said reigning Class B state Player of the Year Moxley will start on the mound Wednesday against Whitestown (28-3), which went 15-0 in league play and 4-0 in the District Five Tournament.
The majority of the Green Wave's roster led Oneonta High to the Class B state championship this past spring.
The Legion state tournament runs through Sunday, with the first championship game slated for 11 a.m. A second title game, if necessary, will follow at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Don't play around with snappers
The other day, I was driving along Route 205 between Mount Vision and Hartwick. Suddenly, I had to swerve out of my lane to miss a huge snapping turtle. It was crossing from a large swamp on the left to some higher ground on the other side of the road.
