O-Tigers rout birds

First baseman Rawley Bishop went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two doubles and two runs Thursday to lead the Oneonta Tigers to an 8-2 New York-Penn League baseball victory at the Aberdeen Ironbirds.

Catcher Keith Hernandez contributed two doubles, an RBI and a run in a 3-for-5 effort for the Tigers, who took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Michael Rockett's two-run single with two out and the bases loaded. Oneonta led the rest of the game.

The Tigers (7-4), who lead the Stedler Division by one game over the Lowell Spinners (7-6), scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-1 lead. They followed with a three-run eighth inning, the result of a bases-loaded double by Bishop with two out.

Oneonta finished with 10 hits and committed no errors in the field. Starting pitcher Gary Perinar improved to 1-1 after allowing one earned run on two hits in five innings. Perinar struck out seven and walked two, and his ERA fell to 3.72.

The Tigers, who played in front of 6,593 fans, look to complete a three-game sweep at Aberdeen tonight. Oneonta returns to Damaschke Field on Saturday to play the Ironbirds (4-9), who are last in the McNamara Division and seven games out of first place. Fireworks will follow the Fourth of July game, which begins at 6:05 p.m.

Oneonta also will host Aberdeen at 6:05 p.m. Sunday and 7:05 p.m. Monday.
