O-Tigers hit early in victory

Jamie Johnson and Rawley Bishop each had two hits as the Oneonta Tigers held on for a 3-0 rain-shortened New York-Penn League victory over the host Aberdeen IronBirds on Wednesday.

The game was called during the bottom of the eighth inning.

Oneonta scored all three of its runs during the third.

The O-Tigers (6-4), who won their third game by shutout this season, regained sole possession of first place in the Stedler Division. Lowell (6-6), which beat Staten Island, 11-0, and Tri-City (5-5), which fell to Brooklyn, 5-4, are each a half-game behind Oneonta.

The Tigers continue their three-game set at Aberdeen at 7:05 p.m. tonight. The teams complete the series Friday. Oneonta then starts a six-game homestand, beginning with a three-game series with the IronBirds at 6:05 p.m. Saturday. The O-Tigers then host Vermont for three, starting Tuesday.

Oneonta got all the offense it needed in the third.

Christopher Sedon singled to left to lead off. After Sedon stole second base, Johnson singled to right, putting runners on first and third. Jim Gulliver then reached on a fielding error by second baseman Buck Britton. Johnson moved to second on the play.

Aberdeen catcher Brian Ward then had a passed ball, allowing Johnson to go to third and Gulliver to second.

Wade Gaynor followed by grounding out to first, scoring Johnson and moving Gulliver to third for a 2-0 lead.

Bishop then flied out to right, scoring Gulliver to make it 3-0.

Alexis Espinoza had Oneonta's other hit.

Four pitchers combined on the nine-hit shutout for Oneonta.

Adam Wilk allowed four hits over three innings, striking out four and walking one. Winning pitcher Clemente Mendoza (1-1) gave up three hits over 1 1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Mike LaLuna followed with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing two hits. He struck out four and walked one. Wade Kapteyn was awarded the save by getting one out in the eighth before the game was called.
