Oneonta Post 259 scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning Thursday, then shut out defending Rhode Island Legion baseball state champion Cranston in the bottom frame for a key 7-6 victory in the Cranston Post 20 Wooden Bat Classic.
"If we had lost that game, there's no way we would have qualified for the semifinals," coach Mike Jester said of Oneonta's second game Thursday, which followed a 3-0 loss to West Seneca earlier in the day. "To come back against the defending Rhode Island state champs on the road _ in the seventh inning _ showed a lot of courage."
David Wright and Ben Moxley then threw back-to-back shutouts Friday as the Green Wave finished pool play with a 3-1 record. In earning the top record in its five-team pool, Oneonta advanced to a semifinal at noon Saturday against the Schenectady County Indians, who finished second in the other five-team pool.
None of that would have been possible without Thursday's comeback victory, though.
Wright capped Oneonta's four-run rally in the seventh with a sacrifice fly for the final margin. Wright then struck out two batters in relief of starter Mark Giallanzo, earning his first save of the season with a scoreless inning on the mound.
Giallanzo (3-1) allowed six runs _ including three in the first inning _ on 10 hits. He struck out eight and walked three for Oneonta, which received three hits apiece from Matt Horne (three RBIs), Sean Getman and Dan Hodne.
Mike Calkins (2-1) took the pitching loss in Oneonta's tournament opener, allowing three runs on eight hits in a complete game. Getman went 3-for-3 and Moxley finished 2-for-3 to pace the Green Wave, who received a double from Ben Payton.
Wright had little time to rest after his relief appearance Thursday but limited Post 28 of Service, Alaska, to two hits in a 3-0 victory. Wright (2-1) struck out six and walked two for Oneonta, which took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Getman and a sacrifice fly by Calkins.
"Those were all the runs David needed to win," Jester said.
Moxley (3-0) followed with seven strikeouts and two walks in a 4-0 five-hitter against Post 3 of Stamford, Conn. Moxley helped himself with an RBI single in the fourth, when Oneonta (12-4) scored all of its runs.
Saturday's semifinal winners will play for the tournament title Sunday.
 Cooperstown beat host Harpursville, 19-9, in a non-tournament Legion baseball game Friday. No other information was available at press time.

Don't play around with snappers
The other day, I was driving along Route 205 between Mount Vision and Hartwick. Suddenly, I had to swerve out of my lane to miss a huge snapping turtle. It was crossing from a large swamp on the left to some higher ground on the other side of the road.
