Oneonta Post 259 is 2-for-2 during the 2012 American Legion Baseball season, even though none of its players went 2-for-anything Wednesday at Oneonta High.
The Green Wave received one hit apiece from 11 players in a 14-4 mercy-rule victory over visiting Harpursville as they moved to 2-0 with a six-inning victory.
David Wright's two-out, two-run single in the second sparked a four-run inning for Oneonta, which took a 4-1 lead into the third. Wright singled up the middle with the bases loaded, making it 2-1 and setting up a pair of ensuing unearned runs. Ben Moxley followed with a pop up to second that was dropped, allowing two more runs to score.
Zach Pidgeon singled in two runners during a six-run fourth that featured a two-RBI double from Dan Hodne. Winning pitcher Sean Getman also doubled for Oneonta, which outhit Harpursville, 11-9.
Getman struck out four and walked two before Ryne Rivino took over in the fifth. Rivino entered with Oneonta ahead, 12-3, and allowed one run over the last two innings.
"He had good command of everything," Green Wave coach Mike Jester said of Getman, the first baseman for Oneonta High's Class B state championship team whose last start on the mound came May 17 (10-1 victory at Windsor).
Oneonta will be on the road all weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. game today at Utica's Murnane Field.
The Green Wave will open play in the Scranton (Pa.) Tournament at 6 p.m. Friday against Wayne, Pa. The team will travel back to Oneonta after Friday's game as most of its players will head to Cooperstown on Saturday morning to be honored for Oneonta High's first baseball state title during the fourth annual Hall of Fame Classic Weekend.
The Yellowjackets will take part in the Cooperstown Game Day Parade at noon Saturday and receive special recognition at Doubleday Field after the first half-inning of the 2 p.m. Classic _ a seven-inning exhibition game that features six Hall of Famers and several other former major leaguers.
Jester said after the Jackets are honored at Doubleday Field, the Green Wave will travel back to Scranton to resume play in the tournament.
The final round of the Scranton Tournament begins at 9 a.m. Sunday.
