Hartwick men ranked first in East Region

Hartwick College's men are the top-ranked team in the initial East Region basketball poll that was released Wednesday.

The rankings are used in the selection of at-large berths for the NCAA Division III tournament. They'll be released weekly until the tournament field is selected Feb. 27.

The Hawks, who qualified for the NCAA tournament last year after winning the Empire 8 Conference tournament, are 20-2. They're followed in the rankings by a 17-3 Oswego squad whose roster includes Oneonta High graduate Alex Mirabito, New York University (17-2), Hobart (16-4), Medaille (20-2) and Nazareth (15-7).

Hartwick's women are ranked third in the East Region. The Hawks (19-3) are behind No. 1 Rochester (17-3) and Ithaca (18-4). St. Lawrence (17-4) is fourth and Oneonta State (14-6) is fifth. Hartwick has victories over Ithaca, St. Lawrence and O-State this season.

Both Hartwick teams travel to Nazareth on Friday and St. John Fisher on Saturday for E8 Conference games.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

SUNYIT 55, Cobleskill 49

Senior Chelcy Moore had game highs of 22 points and 17 rebounds, but host SUNY Cobleskill lost in the North Eastern Athletic Conference on Wednesday.

The Fighting Tigers (11-10, 8-6) received 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists from senior point guard Brittany Britt.

SUNYIT (17-3) improved to 11-1 in NEAC play.

Cobleskill travels to Wells College at 3 p.m. Saturday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

SUNYIT 86, Cobleskill 67

Clint Foster had 16 points and five rebounds, and Jessie Allison contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds for host SUNY Cobleskill, which lost in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Brendan Doherty finished with 13 points, seven assists and four rebounds for the Fighting Tigers (2-20, 2-10), who travel to Wells College at 1 p.m. Saturday.

South Kortright graduate Tanner Metzko had three rebounds and two assists for SUNYIT (4-17, 3-8).
