Zach Collins scored eight of his game-high 30 points in the fourth overtime and Chenango Valley beat host Oneonta High, 92-88, in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference boys basketball game Tuesday.
Bryce Wooden led the Yellowjackets with 26 points _ 20 of them coming in overtime. Fellow senior Mike Calkins had 25 points, despite fouling out early in the second overtime.
OHS (10-6) nearly had it won in the first overtime, but Robert Heller (24 points) hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer to tie it. The Yellowjackets needed a late three-pointer by David Wright (17 points) in the third overtime to extend the game.
"It was a great atmosphere and there was great noise in the gym," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said. "The CV-Oneonta rivalry has always been one of great respect. (CV) coach (Bob) Zanot and I were slapping hands at the end of overtimes and the kids were saying, let's keep it going.
"There's no one I respect more that I coach against than Bob," he continued.
The Yellowjackets, who'll host Lansing in a non-leaguer Friday, led, 38-23, at halftime. Calkins had 17 points at halftime and Sean Getman contributed eight of his 10 points in the first half.
But Collins scored 27 of his points after halftime to lead CV's rally.
"That's one of the top five or six atmospheres we've had at Drago Gymnasium in a long, long time," Mackey said. "This was a tough one because it was Senior Night and those seven guys have meant a lot to me and the program.
"I told the kids after the game we lost a similar game to Owego in 2008 and went on to win the sectional championship. I told them you'll remember what this feels like when we win the sectional title," he continued.
Mackey said he expects his team will be seeded somewhere between 3-6 for the Section Four Class B tournament.
