Oneonta High is a little closer to knowing its opponent for Saturday's 1 p.m. Class B state baseball semifinal.
Wednesday's state quarterfinal between Section Six's Fredonia and Section Five's Wayland-Cohocton was suspended in the sixth inning at Dansville. Fredonia led, 7-5, which is where the teams will pick it up today, though it might not be completed at Dansville. The winner will play Oneonta in the second of two semifinals at Conlon Field in Binghamton. The state final is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at Conlon Field.
The Yellowjackets (22-2) advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 2002 on Tuesday, with a 4-1 win over Section Three's Westhill at DeLutis Field in Rome. Also securing a berth in the state semis Tuesday was Section One's Briarcliff (22-4), which defeated Section Eight's Babylon, 9-4, to reach the semifinals for the second straight year.
In 2011, Briarcliff lost, 7-4, to Chenango Valley in the Class B state final.
Oneonta beat CV, 11-10, Thursday in the Section Four Class B final. The Yellowjackets rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh, which included a three-run homer by Mike Calkins and a walkoff single by Chris Pindar.
Briarcliff will play Section Two's Albany Academy at 10 a.m. Saturday in the first semifinal at Conlon Field. Albany Academy defeated Saranac, 11-0, Wednesday in a quarterfinal.
