Oneonta's Legion baseball team bunched 11 runs into the fourth and fifth innings en route to an 11-4 pool-play victory over Wayne, Pa., in the West Scranton Wood Bat Tournament on Friday.
Mark Giallanzo pulled a three-run triple down the right-field line to highlight the Green Wave's five-run fourth inning as Oneonta improved to 4-0. Dan Hodne contributed an RBI single in a six-run fifth inning that ended with Oneonta ahead, 11-3.
"The first time through, we didn't have very good at-bats," Oneonta coach Mike Jester said. "The second time through, we got our timing down. In the fourth inning, we kind of exploded."
Hodne finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and David Wright and Mike Calkins each went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Calkins earned the pitching victory. He allowed four runs _ one earned _ over six innings, striking nine and walking one. Ben Payton pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
With a roster that includes most of the players who led Oneonta High to a Class B state title this past season, the teams have combined for 20 straight victories. The Yellowjackets ended their 24-2 season on a 16-game winning streak.
The Green Wave was scheduled to play two tournament games Saturday but because the high school team will be honored during the Hall of Classic on Saturday in Cooperstown, it will play once Saturday _ at 5:30 p.m. against Jersey Shore, Pa.
Jester said there's a chance its game against South Scranton might be made up Sunday.
Either way, Jester said if his team wins Saturday, it will play in the consolation or championship games Sunday.

Don't play around with snappers
The other day, I was driving along Route 205 between Mount Vision and Hartwick. Suddenly, I had to swerve out of my lane to miss a huge snapping turtle. It was crossing from a large swamp on the left to some higher ground on the other side of the road.
