Outlaws continue mastery of Hawkeyes

COOPERSTOWN _ The Oneonta-Cooperstown rivalry in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League has turned one-sided.

Two errors helped the Outlaws to four first-inning runs and they went on to a 6-2 victory over the Hawkeyes on Tuesday at Doubleday Field.

Oneonta has swept the first three games in the Mayor's Cup Challenge. Outlaws officials said they believe it's the first time Oneonta has won a game in Cooperstown. The teams played together in the New York Collegiate Baseball League in 2010. The Hawkeyes moved to the PGCBL the following season and Oneonta followed them this season after winning an NYCBL championship in 2011.

The Outlaws' first two wins over Cooperstown this season came at Damaschke Field.

Oneonta starter Sheldon Lee earned the win. The left-hander gave up two runs on five hits in five innings. He struck out three, walked none and hit a batter. Jeremy Rose, Colter Bostick and Clay Bates combined to pitch four scoreless innings of relief for the Outlaws.

"They all pitched very well," Oneonta manager Greg Zachrison said. "From Sheldon to Jeremy to Colter to Clay, they all did well."

Cooperstown pitcher James Norwood took the loss, giving up four unearned runs in seven innings. He struck out six and walked three.

"He battled tonight," Hawkeyes manager Eric Coleman said. "He had one bad inning, but James kept us in the game after that. We did not back him up in the field or at the plate."

Oneonta's big first inning started with a single to right by Logan Brown. Clay Holcomb then reached on a two-base fielding error by third baseman Quinn Pippin, which sent Brown to third. Brown scored on a wild pitch.

Zach Lucas then grounded to third. Pippin's throw was dropped by first baseman Chris Blanton.

Zac Johnson's single down the first-base line scored Holcomb and Lucas scored on Cody Huff's double to right. Huff scored the fourth run of the inning on Sutton Whiting's groundout to second.

Cooperstown's runs came in the fifth inning. Josh Ingham bunted down the third-base line for a single. He advanced to second on Jacob Hubert's single to center.

Brad Vanderglas then bunted down the third-base line. Lee fielded the ball, but his throw to first was high as Ingham scored. Hubert was held at third, but Vanderglas kept running, knocking into Oneonta second baseman Orlando Rivera before being tagged out in a rundown.

"It was obstruction," Coleman said. "They said (Lucas) had to keep running for them to make that call, but they got the call wrong."

After Tyler Mautner grounded out to Lee, Ty Morris doubled to score Hubert to make it 4-2.

Cooperstown stranded 11 runners, including going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

"That's not going to get it done against a good team like this," Coleman said. "It's not going to get it done against any team."

Oneonta capped the scoring in the ninth. Rivera led off with a walk, and took second on a passed ball. Brown then doubled to right. Morris' throw home sailed high into the backstop allowing Rivera to score and sending Brown to third. Brown then scored on Holcomb's double off the wall in left-center for the final run.

Hubert got a single in the bottom of the ninth for Cooperstown, but the Outlaws turned a 4-6-3 double play to end it.

Cooperstown (3-7) plays at Newark tonight. Oneonta (7-3), which has won four straight, is off today and plays a doubleheader at Amsterdam on Thursday.

The Outlaws announced Tuesday they will honor Oneonta High's Class B state championship baseball team before Friday's game against Mohawk Valley at Damaschke Field.

Oneonta Mayor Dick Miller, the Oneonta Common Council and Jeff Bishop, a representative from state Sen. Jim Seward's office, will take part in the ceremony, which will start at 7 p.m.
