Eric Hicks' three-run homer to left capped a seven-run second inning as Hancock shocked visiting Oneonta, 7-5, in a District Six Division II Legion baseball game Tuesday.
"It just goes to show you never know," said Hancock coach Brandon Olbrys, whose team knocked off an Oneonta squad that has many of the same players who led the Yellowjackets to a Class B state title two Saturdays ago. "Yesterday, we got our heads handed to us by Sidney (an 8-0 loss) and then we come back and play a very good game against a very good Oneonta team."
Eight of Hancock's 10 hits off of losing pitcher David Wright came in the second inning. Eli Holton contributed a two-run single in the inning and came around to score on Hicks' home run.
"It's pretty short," Olbrys said of the left-field fence. "It's a bandbox. He didn't get all of it, but he got enough of it."
Wright faced one batter of the minimum over the final four innings.
The Green Wave pulled to 7-5 with two runs in the sixth inning, when Ben Payton and Dan Hodne hit RBI singles off of Tyler Phillips, who bounced back to get the next three batters, including two strikeouts.
Payton had two of Oneonta's six hits.
Rich Mirch, Holton and Phillips had two hits apiece for Hancock (2-2), which hosts Cooperstown today.
Oneonta (5-3, 3-1) travels to Schenectady at 6 p.m. today.
