Oneonta is looking to go 2-for-2 in baseball state-tournament appearances this year.
Post 259 opens play in the District Six Legion Baseball Tournament at noon Sunday at Conlon Field in Binghamton, where Oneonta High won the Class B state championship in June to cap a 24-2 season.
The Green Wave (22-10), whose roster features many of the same players from OHS' first baseball state-championship team, will play the winner of Saturday's first-round game between Sidney Post 217 and Homer. Those two squads will start the seven-team, double-elimination District Six Tournament at noon Saturday at Conlon Field, which will host all of the tournament games.
Should Sidney (17-7) win Saturday, it will play Oneonta in a rematch of a July 9 game at Damaschke Field. Sidney won that game, 13-2, behind a five-hitter from Tyler Hymers.
"I'm not sure who's going to start (on the mound) yet," said Oneonta coach Mike Jester, who started 2012 Class B state Player of the Year Ben Moxley against Sidney on July 9. "We have three or four pretty decent starting pitchers, though."
Owego and Hancock will play at 3 p.m. Saturday, followed by defending District Six champion Binghamton Post 1645 and Vestal at 6 p.m.
The winners of those first-round games will play at 3 p.m. Sunday, with a losers' bracket game to follow at 6 p.m.
Oneonta split with Hancock this season _ avenging a 7-5 loss June 19 with a 10-0 mercy-rule win July 11 _ and topped Binghamton, 7-2, on July 7 during the Broome County Hall of Fame Classic at Conlon Field. Post 259 has not faced Owego, Homer or Vestal this season.
The District Six winner advances to the eight-team New York State American Legion Championship Tournament, which runs Aug. 1-4 at Murnane Field in Utica. District Six will play District Five in the first round of the double-elimination state tournament, which also pits District Nine against District Eight, District Four against District Seven, and District Three against host Adrean Post 625.
Oneonta forced a second championship game in the 2011 District Six Tournament with a 16-7 defeat of Binghamton 1645, which then won the finale, 8-6.
