Stallions beat Glove Cities at buzzer again, 33-32

The Oneonta City Stallions aren't on television, but they still have instant replay.

Noble Champen's 41-yard touchdown pass to Mike Tandle capped the Stallions' 33-32 Northeastern Football Alliance victory over the Glove Cities Colonials with no time left Saturday at Hartwick College's Wright Stadium as Oneonta City improved to 4-3 on the season.

"The same thing happened last year," said Stallions co-owner Tom Terry, whose team earned a 26-25 win over Glove Cities on June 25, 2011, at Hartwick when Cooperstown graduate Tandle caught a 32-yard TD pass from Oneonta High alumnus Champen as time expired.

Zach Blocker's 40-yard kickoff return set up the Stallions at their 48-yard line with 21 seconds to play. Blocker followed with a 1-yard gain before Champen hit Jason Carnel on a 10-yard pass for a first down.

Terry said that left about 3 seconds on the clock for one last play.

"Mike got behind the secondary and Noble just dropped it in," Terry said of the winning pass, which Tandle caught in the right corner of the end zone. "It was a Hail Mary."

Tandle finished with 131 receiving yards on four catches, including a 30-yard TD pass from Champen in the second quarter that led the Stallions to a 20-12 halftime advantage.

Champen gained 59 yards on the ground _ with 30 coming on a touchdown run to open the scoring in the first quarter _ and passed for 155 yards.

Blocker's 50 rushing yards included a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter, and Anthony Bucceri had a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second period.

"That was the first interception return for a touchdown in our history," said Terry, whose football program is in its fourth season. "They played a really good game. It's unbelievable that somebody had to lose."

The victory pulled the Stallions into a two-way tie with the Utica Yard Dawgs (4-3) for third place in the six-team NFA. Glove Cities is second at 5-2, and defending NFA champion Troy is 6-0 atop the standings.

"We control our own destiny in the playoffs right now," said Terry, whose team hosts Troy at 6:30 p.m. this Saturday at Hartwick. "If we beat Watertown and Utica, we're in regardless of what happens with Troy. That game (Saturday) night was huge."

Sidney graduate Jimmy Kazalski went 3-for-4 in extra-point attempts for Oneonta City, which received two interceptions from Andre Pratt and seven tackles apiece from Blocker and Kyle Besemer (Walton).
