Oneonta High whittled a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to two and had a chance at the end, but Monte Richardson's three-pointer went long in a 45-42 basketball loss to visiting Owego on Monday in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference.
The loss ended the Yellowjackets' five-game winning streak.
"It was partly embarrassment," OHS Jerry Mackey said of the reason behind his team's rally from a 39-22 deficit with about six minutes left.
Richardson hit a layup with 8.5 seconds left to make it 44-42, and then made a steal at halfcourt. Richardson dribbled down and pulled up for an open three.
"It was the same scenario as Seton (a 52-48 upset victory Dec. 23). We had a timeout, but I thought Monte could get a good look and we rolled with it," Mackey said. "It came up six inches too long."
Alex Mirabito scored 10 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter.
Of his team's play while falling into a 17-point deficit, Mackey said: "We can't mail it in intensity-wise. We did a number of mental things we shouldn't be doing. I'll take the blame for that."
Tony Burns contributed eight points for the Yellowjackets.
"He did so many other things," Mackey said of Burns. "It's his senior year and he'd been kind of an unheralded player for us, but outside of Alex Mirabito, he's been our best effort guy."
Harley Edwards scored a game-high 20 points for Owego, which won at OHS for the second straight season, beating the Yellowjackets, 64-61, last season. OHS travels to Whitney Point on Wednesday.

Kyle Ray and Cody Komenda had respective 11- and 10-point nights to lead a balanced-scoring Unatego squad to a Midstate Athletic Conference non-division home victory.
Ten Spartans scored at least four points.
"That's a real good sign for us," Unatego coach Jim Knight said. "Everyone shot the ball well and we got a lot in transition, which helped our shooting percentage. Our three-point attempts were way down, which is what we're striving for. We only took five threes."
Unatego (4-4) opens MAC league play on Thursday at Walton.
Ryan Porter had 14 points to lead Bainbridge-Guilford.

Mike Brown scored 10 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter for visiting Stamford, which rallied in the second half for a Delaware League win.
Brown hit 5 of 6 free throws in a 24-12 fourth quarter for the Indians, who finished 16-for-23 from the foul line.
"We played our hearts out, we just ran out of gas I think," said Windham coach Joel Middleton, whose starting five played the whole game and gave the Warriors a 25-24 halftime lead. "I think my guys got tired, so we started fouling a lot."
Brown also hit four of Stamford's five three-pointers. The other came from David Gula, who scored 15 points. The Indians also received 18 points from Mike Gaddis, who shot 8-for-10 from the foul line.
Zhenya Doolan paced Windham (2-5, 0-5) with a season-high 23 points and 16 rebounds. Evan Goettsche contributed 16 points for the Warriors, who are at Andes today.

Patrick Miller scored a game-high 14 points Saturday for Schoharie, which pulled away from non-league host Cherry-Valley Springfield with a 16-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Miller hit four of Schoharie's seven three-pointers en route to one of three double-digit scoring efforts for his team.
"When we were down by only five points in the fourth quarter, the turning point was when Miller and (Cam) Bullis nailed back-to-back three-pointers," Cherry Valley-Springfield coach Jordan Jaquay said.
Mike Cagganello led CV-S (1-4, 0-1) with 10 points, and David Adams contributed nine.
The Patriots are at Poland on Wednesday.
